Overall Feeling:
Champions Online is good enough to earn some play time especially since it will cost you nothing but some bandwidth. The character creator alone could keep you entertained for hours and honestly, might even be better than the actual game. I don't see it having the same success as other recent f2p titles but it is worth a revisit nonetheless.
The Pros:
The game is free which certainly no one will complain about. The game is quirky and cheesy like any good comic book should be. The art style is fitting for the genre and like all superhero MMO's, the character creator is out of this world.
The Cons:
You will learn very quickly why the game didn't succeed on a subscription model. Some of the most basic MMO elements like targeting and mob-pathing are horrible. The game has some strange glitches and much of the game is hard to understand and poorly explained.
Let's start this review with some basic information about why this review even exists. Recently Champions Online became Champions Online: Free For All and switched from the common $15 (monthly) subscription model to a free2play title. This means the game is not only devoid of a monthly subscription it is actually completely free to download. With the movement of many MMO's towards this model we here at Shogun thought it was worth revisiting this title with its new payment model. It struggled to stay alive when you had to pay, how does it fare now that it is free?
