The tone of Injustice: Gods Among Us is hammered down in this new story centric trailer that is so damn serious that it’s worthy of the ever terrific “Just Got Real” Bad Boys gif.  What exactly has caused such a feeling amidst and otherwise arcade driven fighting game? Well how does the destruction of Metropolis sound along with Superman and Wonder Woman getting all high and mighty with a rather intrusive form of justice?

At this point there may be so many games coming out in the first half of 2013 that it’s hard to keep track of which games should immediately join our collection and which should receive the Gamefly/Redbox treatment.  Choosing between a dozen games may be a tough thing to do for gamers with less than deep pockets, but fans of fighting games are likely going to go all in for Injustice: Gods Among Us and the rather massive special edition SKU that will be released alongside the game.

A deadly assassin has joined the cast of Injustice: Gods Among Us that may be familiar both to comic book fans and past players in the Mortal Kombat series.  While MK co-creator/NetherRealm Studios creative lead Ed Boon has been up to his old tricks by teasing character reveals via Twitter, which has included things such as Reese’s Pieces and Swamp Thing comics, we finally have a character reveal today that isn’t quite as surprising as we all hoped it would be.

This week marks the arrival of the New York Comic Con and of course such a thing entails several video game announcements being made.  Far from being a huge game centric show, the New York con has brought some goodness over the last few years and that will definitely ring true thanks to the comic based brawler that is Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The financial willingness of gamers will once again be tested thanks to WB Interactive and Injustice: Gods Among Us.  There’s already a huge amount of interest in the DC based brawler created by the team at NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat), but in the world of corporations that isn’t enough to guarantee a home-run as everything needs a Collector’s Edition SKU these days.

As nice as it would’ve been to see Injustice: Gods Among Us be released this year, the game was always pegged for a 2013 release.  When WB Games and NetherRealm Studios announced the game in early June it seemed as if it would’ve been a key candidate for a Holiday 2012 release, but unlike other corporate minded studios WB knows better than to rush a game to retail far ahead of when it’s completed.

After the rather talkative video that was released yesterday, WB Games and NetherRealm Studios have followed up on their promise of giving us more substantial reveals for Injustice: Gods Among Us. With the game appearing at the geek mecca that is the San Diego Comic Con it was kind of required that Injustice makes an impression and I think such a thing has definitely been achieved since two additional characters have been revealed.

Revealed in a way that was truly surprising, Injustice: Gods Among Us has already gotten a huge amount of buzz for a variety of reasons. First off it helps that the veteran team behind the Mortal Kombat games is crafting the super heroe based action of Injustice and secondly it’s just cool to see The Flash beat the living crap out of Superman once in a while.  While we’ve only see a small sampling of the game so far, a new video has been released in advanced of the upcoming reveals that will be made at the SDCC later this week.

After a brief lull for a couple of years fighting games are back in full force and now we’re finally at the point where we’re receiving games that solely aren’t part of the Street Fighter and Tekken brands.  The fighting genre may not be on a complete wave of receiving original IPs just yet, but games like SkullGirls certainly signify that such a thing is on the way.  Even better, established companies and developers are opting to take a risk by producing games that no one would’ve ever expect, a perfect example is the DC Comics based action of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Marvel may be beating DC in a lot of areas recently as most comic book fans and general geeks will say that stuff like The Avengers and even how Marvel is handling their comic books is leagues better than what DC has done. Now I’m not trying to ignite a mass fanboy war of some kind, but there will always be those who dig what Marvel does and in some ways it’s obvious that DC is lagging behind in some form.  Whatever may have transpired in the past DC may be on the way to beating Marvel when it comes to one specific area: providing a good fighting video game.
