Changing Tones: The Value Of Voice Actors In Video Games

After being teased for weeks, GDC 2013 finally brought us the reveal that was bound to happen sooner or later: Metal Gear Solid V.  As expected, Hideo Kojima proved that he’s a master at hyping/trolling the gaming community as it was revealed that Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are indeed connected as they’re part of MGS V.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Keeping a few of the longstanding Metal Gear elements such as stealth, cardboard boxes, and hidden posters of Gravure models, Metal Gear Rising injects an amazing amount of personality and gameplay depth to the franchise.  Platinum Games clearly have molded the new exploits of Raiden around their strong suit of dazzling action, but the studio has done an excellent job at making the combat accessible yet skillful all while not forsaking everything by making it too easy.  There may be a few minor rough spots here and there, but Metal Gear Rising is a simply brilliant game that easily ranks as one of the best games in the Metal Gear franchise.

The Pros:

+ Zandatsu mechanics and combat offer some amazing scenarios due to the amount of depth that’s provided.
+ Boss battles offer some nice variety and stunning combat choreography.
+ Controls are perfect since nothing is complicated or clunky.
+ Special graphical effects such as chopping stuff up is convincing and looks cool.
+ Plot has some good character flourishes all while featuring the standard serious Metal Gear narrative.
+ Voice acting is a bit corny in some spots but it works since each character is memorable.

The Cons:

- Camera is a bit too close to Raiden which results in it being difficult to view everything.
- Enemy lock-on could use some work.
- Some of the environments look a bit drab and are missing a sense of character.

One of the many goals of any video game is to immerse the player into the experience.  Usually the key thing a development team often strives for, immersion within a game is not an easy goal to achieve since there are so many factors to take into consideration.  With things such as the narrative, gameplay, and visuals to take into account, making the player feel truly connected to the character they’re controlling is something that truly sets the great developers apart from the rest.

The Phantom Pain And The Element Of Surprise

Last night something rare happened in the video game industry: a trailer was released that totally shocked us and left everyone talking for hours. Sometimes it’s to be expected for a reveal of megaton proportions to be made, but receiving what will likely be the most talked about reveal of 2012 when the year is almost over and having it come from the Spike Video Game Awards is ultimately what makes the industry so great; unexpected moments can happen at nearly any time.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Videos Showcase Dazzling Action

This week Konami held a special press event in which the media was invited to try out a near finished version of Metal Gear Rising: Revenganvce. Of course the staff of Shogun Gamer weren’t invited to try things out, but that won’t stop us from providing you fine readers with the array of new media from the game which reaches all sorts of levels in the badass department.

UK Gamers Receiving Metal Gear Rising Limited Edition

There is hope for Metal Gear fans after all as Konami has just revealed the European Limited Edition SKUs for Metal Gear Rising.  If you recall, last week Konami unveiled not just one but two exquisite CE’s for Rising which traded in tacky accessories for stylish things such as nice packaging and a rather kick-ass Raiden figure.  Thought had it that Konami wouldn’t bring either of those packages to Western markets, but today we stand corrected.

Konami Unveils Amazing Premium Packages For Metal Gear Rising

It’s always interesting to see how a publisher will not only market a game in the Western and Eastern markets, but to see what sort of specialty SKU they’ll release as well.  At this point gamers in the West are used to seeing sometimes sophisticated premium packages released in Japan that are amazing in every way and easily justify the high price tags that are attached.

Konami Unveils North American Collector's Edition SKUs for Metal Gear Rising and Zone of the Enders HD

WB Interactive showed us a rather perfect Collector’s Edition for Injustice: Gods Among Us earlier this week that perfectly fit the target demographic without skewing too low in an attempt to earn a few extra bucks.  The nature of CE’s still draws the ire of gamers once in a while since quality products that aren’t filled with needless plastic are hard to come by.

A Small But Interesting Update On Konami's Contra Reboot

Games come and go, but there are a few which are announced only to forever fade away from our memories.  One game that may have been forgotten about despite it’s stature within the hierarchy of classic video games was the Contra reboot from Konami.  If you recall, back at E3 2011 Konami released a very short teaser for a new Contra game.

First Look At The Bosses Of Metal Gear Rising [Video/Screens]

As much as TGS is associated with the PlayStation brand, gamers also think of Metal Gear Solid once September rolls around.  Konami and Kojima Productions may share some Metal Gear love to other industry events such as E3, but TGS is usually the one place in which we can look forward to receiving a somewhat excessively long trailer that ends with a comedic stinger.  Such a tradition still holds true for TGS 2012 as we have an extended, and rather revealing, look at Metal Gear Rising.

Konami Packs In Metal Gear Demo With Zone of the Enders Once Again

Konami is keeping the tradition alive pertaining to the Zone of the Ender and Metal Gear franchises. As veteran gamers know, when the first Zone of the Enders game was released on the PS2 back in 2001 it included the first and only public demo of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. Back in the day before demos were made available on a near weekly basis thanks to digital distribution, receiving a demo packed in with a game was a big deal, thus ZoE was bought by gamers merely to get a taste of MGS2.
