Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified [Review]

Overall Feeling:

As a game Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified is kind of okay. Seriously, it isn’t that bad since the controls feel good and are responsive and the graphics border on being just okay.  The problem is that the game doesn’t feel like a true CoD experience due to the lack of a traditional story mode and lackluster multiplayer components that feel like a few features were thrown in and it was called a day.  That along with some rather poor A.I. design which has enemies who are all too willing to die makes for a game that definitely isn’t worth $50.

The Pros:

+ Controls are good, even if they take some getting used to.
+ Graphics still aren’t great but they seem to be slightly improved compared to Resistance: Burning Skies.
+ Online performance was shockingly smooth and hitch free.

The Cons:

- Single-player content is severely lacking in appeal and replay options.
- Enemy A.I. is laughable in how eager they are to die.
- Multiplayer modes feel weak due to the limited options.
- Where are the now expected CoD features like CoD: Elite or the Zombies mode?
- Price is simply way too high as this isn’t a traditional or console level CoD game that can be taken on the go.

At long last I found myself with the potential savior of the PlayStation Vita. So far Sony’s handheld has had some decent titles, but none of the have really had the massive worldwide appeal found in the Call of Duty series. So the arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, which in my case was procured through Gamefly since Activision wouldn’t send us a review code, was kind of a big deal for me.

Nihilistic Software Changes Company Focus, Rebrands As New Company

News of developers shuttering or changing their focus may sadly be becoming an all too familiar occurrence and today news has broke that yet another developer is shifting gears.  The news may not be as dire as the layoffs and subsequent move to mobile games that LightBox Interactive recently took, but developer Nihilistic has announced that the company will be going the digital route for the foreseeable future.

Resistance: Burning Skies [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Resistance: Burning Skies is a game that should’ve been fun but simply isn’t good by any stretch of the imagination.  Having dual-stick controls in a handheld FPS is nice as it results in the game having a familiar feel, but the gameplay is dull, the level design is so basic that it’s insulting, and the plot is thinner than what we’re used to receiving from the Resistance franchise.  The multiplayer mode could’ve been a highlight but in the end doesn’t have the same addicting feel or engaging modes as the core Resistance games on the PS3. I really can’t think of a reason for someone to play Burning Skies other than to boost their Trophy count and to perhaps play what will likely be the final Resistance game to be made.

The Pros:

+ Core controls work well in how they feel and how easy it is to use the weapons.

+ Level checkpoints are handled rather well so despite levels taking 30 to 40 minutes to finish the game has a pick up and play feel to it.

+ Easiest Platinum Trophy to obtain in a Vita game to date.

The Cons:

- Story is complete garbage that doesn’t expand on the lore in the game and is occupied with one dimensional characters.

- Enemy A.I. can be absolutely stupid at times which doesn’t make for a fun experience.

- Level design feels more restricted than previous Resistance games and doesn’t have much variety to it.

- Final boss is absolutely terrible in every possible way. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

- Visuals don’t have much personality to them and look a bit ugly in a few areas.

For the last couple of year’s gamers, in particular those in the PS3 camp, have experienced and enjoyed the Resistance series.  One of the first launch games for the PS3, Resistance wasn’t completely original in such a way that it was a truly amazing game, but at the time it showed some maturity on the part of developer Insomniac Games and it was just an old-school FPS that was fun to play and was a blast to experience when playing online.

First Multiplayer Footage Of Resistance: Burning Skies Looks Good

If there was one game this gen that was a bit underrated in the multiplayer department it was Resistance.  Far before gamers became infatuated with Perks and doing mass kill streaks to unlock special abilities, the first Resistance game presented an incredibly balanced and fun multiplayer mode in which I honestly sunk too much time into. Seriously, I don’t want to think of how many hours I spent playing Resistance online as it would honestly seem absurd but in the end my dedication to the game was because I loved it.

Resistance: Burning Skies Gets Serious In This New Video

In less than two months we’ll be receiving a brand new entry in the Resistance franchise but instead of appearing on the PS3 or the PSN we’ll receiving such goodness on the PlayStation Vita with Resistance: Burning Skies. I don’t know if the lack of overall excitement for Resistance: Burning Skies is just because some people are burned out on the Resistance franchise or simply don’t know that the game is coming out in May.

Sony announces release dates for Socom 4 and PlayStation Move Heroes

As earlier reports indicated, Sony has finally revealed when the PlayStation Move centric PlayStation Move Heroes and the next installment of the popular Socom franchise will be released.  After being delayed from its original Holiday 2010 release window, the next installment of Zipper Interactive’s Socom franchise will be ready for duty in April.  Socom 4 could become a huge title amongst PS3 gamers since it’s from a beloved franchise and also because the game supports the PlayStation Move and the recently revealed

PlayStation Move Heroes could be coming to gamers rather soon

Right now we’re in a bit of a dry spell in terms of big games that exclusively use the PlayStation Move, but that could change in March.  Siliconera has dug up some info from the latest issue of the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu which lists the PlayStation Move centric, and rather oddly titled, PlayStation Move Heroes with a March release.
