Ridge Racer Unbounded

Ridge Racer Unbounded [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Stuck in the middle between being a full-on arcade game and a stylized sim, Ridge Racer Unbounded plods along in an experience that’s passable in a few areas but is far from wowing us as some arcade racing games tend to do.  There are some unique elements in Ridge Racer Unbounded like the track editor, but other than that the game feels like it’s an amalgamation of hot trends and different racing games as opposed to being a unique entity. It may have been fine to alter the Ridge Racer formula a bit, but in the end what’s offered in Ridge Racer Unbounded lacks any substance and simply isn’t that much fun to play.

The Pros:

+ Track Editor is easy to use and is robust in what can be done.

+ In-game presentation is rather slick in how it presents key info to the player.

+ Main campaign is rather lengthy in a good way if you like that sort of thing.

The Cons:

- Difficulty level is insanely high from the get go.

- The cars don’t feel like they’re driving on ice, but the car handling doesn’t feel fluid and there’s no physicality to the cars.

- Environmental destruction is slightly impressive but feels flat and ultimately pointless in the later stages of the game.

- Visually the game fails to stick out much due to drab industrial and urban locales we’ve seen dozens of times already.

As gamers we want developers and publisher to take risks with the experiences they offer us.  One major grip of gamers this generation is that games have fallen into a familiar pattern in which half a dozen games all try to copy one particular thing that’s popular – thus turning things into a “me too!” contest instead of pushing innovation and originality to the forefront.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a developer wanting to push something new to gamers as I implore more studios to do such a thing.

The Extensive Level Editor Of Ridge Racer Unbounded Is Shown Off [Video]

Ridge Racer Unbounded has gotten a lot of heat so far since it’s what many consider to be a death of a once great franchise. It may not be totally fair for people to think the Ridge Racer series is dead with the imminent release of Unbounded, but the shift from stylish racing focused on drifting to a game where the main draw is to drive through walls does seem a bit odd and like more of an evolutionary leap than a video game series should take.

Prepare For Lots Of Smashing And Uncharacteristic Racing In This Ridge Racer Unbounded Video

I’ve previously voiced my thoughts on how Ridge Racer Unbounded didn’t immediately please me as a longtime Ridge Racer fan but could still be an okay arcade racing game.  Even more I actually began to anticipate Ridge Racer Unbounded after learning that the game would include a City Creator Mode in which gamers would be able to create the landscapes that they race around.  Maybe I’m just having a bad day, but I’ve now jumped off the Ridge Racer Unbounded bandwagon based on how one note the game looks in a gameplay video taken from Gamescom.

Ridge Racer Unbounded Is Jumping Aboard The User-Generated Content Bandwagon

To the fanbase that has been with the franchise for the better part of a decade Ridge Racer Unbounded isn’t a “proper” Ridge Racer game.  If Namco Bandai decided to change up the style of the game a bit and add a few minor gameplay additions I think gamers wouldn’t be fussing that much.

Ridge Racer Unbounded Trailer Finally Hits The Streets But Is It Any Good?

Sometimes I find myself lost for words when it comes to discussing a video game, either for good or bad reasons.  Maybe I’m getting too caught up in things and like any sort of grieving process I merely need to accept things for what they are and move on.  I definitely feel that’s what I need to do with Ridge Racer Unbounded but at the same time I may finally be closer to getting to grips with the game and accepting it for what it is.

Lastest Ridge Racer Unbounded Trailer Is Smashingly Absurd

As a gamer I like to think that I can be pretty open minded about certain things or at least be willing to try something out at least once via a demo or snatching it from Gamefly.  Looking at what has been shown at Ridge Racer Unbounded I feel a bit closed minded of sorts since I’m having trouble accepting the jump from stylish arcade racing to complete brute force street racing with a pronounced American appeal.

Namco Bandai Reveal New Ridge Racer Game And It Won't Be A Fan Pleaser

There are some things I hold close to my heart as a gamer and one of those things is the Ridge Racer franchise.  The Ridge Racer franchise may have first started during the early days of the PS1, but the franchise has never quite blown up, partly because Namco doesn’t flood the market with yearly installments. Instead, it has become a tradition of sorts to release a new Ridge Racer game when a new piece of hardware is released. We got a new Ridge Racer when the Xbox 360 and PS3 came out and now the Nintendo 3DS is being given the same treatment with Ridge Racer 3D.
