Disney and Sega Announce Castle of Illusion Remake

Disney continues to show their flexibility when it comes to their video game licenses, at least those that don’t feature Stormtroopers or Bounty Hunters, since Sega has announced an HD remake of the Sega Genesis classic Castle of Illusion.  One of the many games that the 25 year-old+ generation of gamers was reared on, Castle of Illusion will be comng into our homes once again on the PSN, XBLA, and PC.

Footage Surfaces Of Aliens: Crucible, The RPG From Obsidian

The “what-if” possibilities that surround Aliens: Colonial Marines will likely never cease to be until we get an official comment as to what the hell actually happened, but today we do have a taste at the Aliens game that could’ve been.

Aliens: Colonial Marines [Review]

Overall Feeling:

The bad far outweighs the infinitesimal amounts of good within Aliens: Colonial Marines since the game is riddled with poor design choices, bad A.I., and action scenarios which become old hat.  Feeling rather archaic right from the get-go, Aliens: Colonial Marines doesn’t have enough of a personality to get by on fan-service alone since the story and writing is simply abysmal and feels like it was shoe-horned in with what remnants of the game which remained that were deemed passable enough to ship by the development team.  With a multiplayer mode that’s as equally forgettable as the single-player campaign, Gearbox Software has delivered one of the most disappointing FPS games this generation since it entirely missed the opportunities the Aliens franchise provides.

The Pros:

+ Trophies/Achievements are easy.
+ It gave actors Michael Biehn (Corporal Hicks) and Lance Henriksen (Bishop) an easy paycheck for their voice acting contributions.
+ The single-player campaign is short so the horror thankfully doesn’t last long.

The Cons:

- Story is complete non-sense that is filled with dialog that strives to be funny and dramatic yet isn’t.
- Gameplay is boring, lacks tension, and feels ancient in what it attempts to do.
- Graphics and tone are flat and lacks any kind of detail to really make the world feel fleshed out.
- A.I. is horrendous. Seriously, enough with the door humping from my comrades and Xenomorphs doing floor shuffles in corners.
- Multiplayer mode is simply there and isn’t addicting enough to warrant a long-term commitment.

As someone who is a video game journalist/blogger along with being a lifelong gamer, I think I’m a good judge of character when it comes to an actual video game.  Like everyone else, I may have my personal preferences along with a few games that are guilty pleasures of mine, but all together I like to think I have an astute understanding of how to judge a game – even if it’s in the form of a preview/early showing.

Former Tester Details Development Drama For Aliens: Colonial Marines [Rumor]

We may only be in the second month of 2013 yet already we could have the biggest scandal, if not disappointment, the games industry will receive this year.  While my full review of the game will be up on Tuesday, the flaws of Aliens: Colonial Marines have been detailed by other folks since the game is far from the masterpiece it was initially depicted to be.

Anarchy Reigns [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Filled with blood, flying body parts, foul language, and a buttery beat infused hip-hop soundtrack, Anarchy Reigns is an enjoyable brawler even if it has a few minor issues.  As a spiritual successor to Mad World the combat within Anarchy Reigns is enjoyable even though the immediate style isn’t entirely there due to the appearance of visuals that sometimes fall flat, both artistically and graphically.  A simply addicting game to play online, Anarchy Reigns definitely has the makings to be a cult hit that gamers likely will be talking about years from now due to its inventive take on the classic brawling genre.

The Pros:

+ Combat is brutal, fast, and easy to get a grip of.
+ Single-player campaign is nice and feels thought out.
+ The main characters are all a blast to play as or fight against.
+ OST is amazing. Seriously, this is pretty much a follow-up to the Mad World OST.
+ Multiplayer modes are fun and perform well technically (no lag/matchmaking issues).

The Cons:

- Art style falls flat due to poor designs and low graphical fidelity.
- More focus on story missions, without having to do the side missions, would’ve been nice.
- Dodging feels a bit off and can lead to combat annoyances.

Sometimes it’s interesting to look at a game beyond what may be present on the surface.  Most of the times we’ll look at a game simply as a brawler, a plat former, or as an action-adventure sort of thing and merely call it a day.  Of course the scope of some games may be limited, but it’s interesting to look at the different elements that make up for the overall experience and how they either succeed or fail in the process.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed [Review]

Overall Feeling:

A few notable fan-favorite characters and franchises may not be in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, but the game is still amazing thanks to gameplay that is balanced and visuals that are delightful.  Opting not to simply make a sequel that has an incremental increase in quality, Sumo Digital have delivered a game that feels like a true sequel as it has loads of content and increased production values. If you enjoyed Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing or are a fan of kart titles all together, then Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a game that not only does the Sega world justice but is a welcomed addition to the somewhat sparse kart racing genre.

The Pros:

+ Vehicle alt modes are executed well and feature some amazing stage sections.
+ Controls still feel spot on.
+ Stages maintain their franchise identity while being fun to race on.
+ Graphics are insanely colorful and do an excellent job at balancing the different franchise art styles.

The Cons:

- Certain character/franchise omissions are disappointing.
- Online matchmaking is hit & miss at times.

Even though there are dozens of major game publishers and developers out there, only a select few hold a special place in our hearts for various reasons, most of which are personal. For the people out there who have been gaming for such a long time that it’s almost embarrassing that they’re as old as their favorite gaming franchise, Sega likely has a key place in their hearts.  Personally I can tell you in great the specific moments in which I played Sega titles like Virtua Fighter, Die Hard Arcade, L.A.

Yet another cancelled project, or pitch video rather, has surfaced of a potential re-imagining of a classic gaming franchise.

Bayonetta Set To Appear In The Western Release Of Anarchy Reigns

It may have taken roughly a year and a half for the game to finally hit our shores, but the brawler that is Anarchy Reigns is still a thing that will actually see the light of day.  Gamers in Japan may have been lucky to have the game since July, yet for some reason Sega decided to delay the game from releasing in the west until 2013, January 2013 to be exact as per the last major update that was given.

Wreck-It Ralph Is Front and Center In These New Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Screens

Potentially stirring up debates of marketing pushed too heavily within a game, Sega has released some new screens showcasing the appearance Wreck-It Ralph, the main character of the upcoming Disney CG film of the same name, in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.  Announced rather subtly earlier this Summer via a Sega blog post, Sega has released brand new screens showing Ralph and classic Sega characters in some rather intense yet colorful kart racing action.

Sega Goes Old-School With The Model 2 Collection

The moments in which I will whole heartedly give a company my money without a second thought is rare, but such a thing is the case with the latest reveal made by Sega. Certain choices made by Sega may seem questionable such as the Anarchy Reigns debacle, but the company is doing gamers a solid by releasing the ode to old-school gaming that is the Model 2 Collection.
