Sony Pictures

Next Resident Evil Movie Given Release Date

The sixth, and presumably last, Resident Evil movie has now been given a release date. While an official announcement has yet to be made with the typical vague PR details meant to hype things up, ShockTilYouDrop is reporting that Sony Pictures has given Resident Evil 6 a September 12, 2014 release date.

007 Legends [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Instead of coming across as a love letter to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise, 007 Legends comes across as a soulless and poorly conceived game.   A familiar presence may be felt through the inclusion of classic Bond films, but everything that made those films memorable is either missing or has been trimmed in a barely recognizable or cohesive form.  With gameplay that feels archaic and like it was merely trying to meet its assuredly short development deadline, 007 Legends is a huge missed opportunity and is yet another example of how future Bond games need to go in a different direction, specifically one that isn’t influenced by Call of Duty.

The Pros:

+ It’s possible to play the game without any annoying technical hiccups.
+ Aiming at the countless goons of Auric Goldfinger or Hugo Drax is easy thanks to the responsive controls.
+ The fact that Eurocom created this whole game with a short dev cycle is commendable, despite the obvious shortcomings it has.

The Cons:

- The retelling of the classic Bond films is horrible since its missing the character that defined those films.
- A constant shoot-em-up approach results in an experience that quickly becomes tiresome due to the uninspired level design.
- Graphics are ok but are nothing that screams of the high-production values and sleek presentation people associate with the 007 franchise.
- Multiplayer modes featured some noticeable lag alongside the rather tepid gameplay and predictability of everything.
- The voice over replacement for Daniel Craig works in some instances but sounds incredibly stiff at times.
- The ending is flaccid to say the least.

For the last 50 years we’ve seen James Bond defeat massive crime organizations, save the world from the brink of WWIII, escape otherwise deadly situations, and of course make countless women fall in love with him in less than a week.  The character of James Bond may be legendary due to his extraordinaire feats as a master spy, but what’s more impressive is that the franchise itself has lasted as long as it has.

Resident Evil: Damnation [Review]

Overall Feeling:

With no Milla Jovovich in sight and a story that stays true to the RE universe more or less, Resident Evil: Damnation exceeds the somewhat low expectations set for it as it provides a fun and somewhat thrilling experience.  On top of the standard RE levels of diabolical plans which are never laid out perfectly, Damnation ends up being a good action movie which rests high above the mediocre and dreadful offerings we've received in the past.

The Pros:

+ Story is simple, dumb, filled typical characters – it’s pure Resident Evil.

+ Leon isn’t a muscle bound mope with an emo haircut as he’s instead a one-liner cracking badass.

+ None of the action scenarios are similar to one another and ….

+ Stylistically the movie has some true character to it even though the visuals are a bit inconsistent.

+ Acting manages to make a silly plot acceptable thanks to the talents of actors such as Matthew Mercer.

The Cons:

- Visuals are inconsistent in some areas and aren’t prime top-tier material.

- Plot has some rather gaping holes but such a thing is par for the course for the RE franchise.

Sometimes when we play a video game we may come to a certain realization, in particular the wonderful thought of “Wouldn’t this be cool as a movie?”  For the last decade or so video games have matched if not exceeded the scope of certain Hollywood movies, but at the same time the feeling always creeps up on us of seeing a particular world brought to life in a live-action setting and perhaps being expanded upon, either to add a little more thematic juice to the story or even up the action quotient higher than what we were able to control.

The Most Iconic Bond Film Of All Time Joins 007 Legends

We’re getting closer and closer to the release of Skyfall, the newest James Bond movie, and Activision has finally revealed the final film set to be included in 007 Legends. To no real surprise, the fifth and final classic Bond film bound to be retold in 007 Legends is none other than the all-time classic that is Goldfinger.

Resident Evil: Retribution [Movie Review]

Overall Feeling:

Resident Evil: Retribution is still an over-the-top movie which has people rappelling out of aircraft duel-wielding machine guns or a giant Licker roaming a faux Russia, but it’s a level of stupid action that isn’t inane or too fluffy; it’s just fun if you go with it and love that sort of thing.  A bit more mature in some departments, Resident Evil: Retribution tries some new things which work while others, such as the addition of established game characters, aren’t pulled off successfully due to somewhat shoddy writing and character development.  I don’t think Resident Evil: Retribution is an instant action movie classic, but it is good enough to have some fun with and it’s ultimately a continued improvement over past RE movies.

The Pros:

+ The plot is a bit different, but it has some nice callbacks to past entries in the series, and is more reserved in getting to the action.

+ This may be the fifth time she’s portrayed the character, but Milla Jovovich does a good job portraying Alice and adding new dimension to the character.

+ Action scenes may be shorter this time out but thankfully they’re still shot well as everything is captured without shaky cam effects.

+ Once again Tomandandy deliver an excellent soundtrack that adds a nice layer to the film.

+ Albert Wesker (Shaun Roberts) is awesome. Seriously, make a spin-off movie or game just about him and I’ll be there day 1.

The Cons:

- It’s cool to have Leon and Barry in the mix, but neither of them really does anything and they aren’t fully established as characters.

- The action oddly feels a bit shorter and a few sequences are missing an impact to fully convey what’s happening.

- The movie doesn’t feel unfocused, but at times it does feel like certain things were trimmed, though not affecting the meaning/impact of the plot.

- The directing and 3D effects are good but lack some of the flourish found in Resident Evil: Afterlife.

When a movie goes on to spawn sequels so much that it becomes an established franchise it’s hard to know what to expect. In some ways we as movie viewers know that a few returning faces will appear and that the action will remain same more or less (swashbuckling sword action/martial arts brawling), but in some cases sequels in a franchise can feel like completely new movies by having a different tone or style.

Uncharted Film Starts From Scratch Yet Again

Just the other day I was thinking about what was the status of the Uncharted movie. I know that wondering about such a thing may seem trivial in a sense or I would be better off thinking about video game movies starring Michael Fassbender, but nonetheless I wondered where the Uncharted film stood in the giant machine that is Hollywood film development.

The Assassin's Creed Movie Gets A Major Actor For The Lead Role

Perhaps it’s merely wishful thinking, but our first truly great video game film could come in the form of the forthcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed movie. Previously it was rumored that Sony won the bidding rights to release the Assassin’s Creed movies, but now it has been revealed that none other than actor Michael Fassbender will star in the movie.

New Resident Evil: Retribution Trailer Is Silly In All The Right Ways

At long last we have the trailer for a film that I know everyone has been waiting for deep inside their hearts – Resident Evil: Retribution. Ok, maybe every doesn’t like to stare at Milla Jovovich as she battles zombies and monsters in slow-motion, but for those who enjoy such a thing then the premier trailer for Retribution will deliver that in spades along with a host of other bonus goodies that deliver +20 on the cheese factor scale.

Film Version Of Shadow Of The Colossus Still Alive, Director Chosen

Sony seems to be pushing for more of their video game properties to go the cinematic route as Sony Pictures division is currently attempting to bring both Uncharted and Twisted Metal to the big screen.  The common belief is that most movies based on games tend to be varying degrees of garbage, but what will happen when a talented young director is assigned to take on a video game that’s loved for its uniqueness and complete lack of dialogue and obvious story exposition?

Twisted Metal Movie Casting Call

Last week we were greeted to the somewhat unlikely news that Sony Pictures was actively planning to do a presumably live-action Twisted Metal film. Now unlike some of Sony’s other video game film adaptations, a Director was attached right at the start and that was none other than Brian Taylor, the man who directed the mostly passable in a guilty fashion sort of way film that is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
