SSX - Mount Eddie DLC [Review]

Overall Feeling:

As a somewhat minimal add-on to the core SSX experience the Mount Eddie DLC succeeds in giving some exciting content to gamers as well as providing a much desired return to the classic SSX formula.  Mount Eddie may not be bursting at the seams with content as it only has a couple of events, but at the end of the day it’s still an amazing addition to SSX since it captures the same fun energy that the series had back in the PS2 era.

The Pros:

+ The price point is perfect for what’s offered.

+ Combining the tone of the new SSX with the classic era doesn’t feel too odd as both are evenly represented.

+ Mount Eddie itself has a balanced design which results in some amazing trick opportunities.

The Cons:

- Not having a Deadly Descent does feel a bit odd and like a missed opportunity.

- Half pipes are slightly under-utilized which is a shame.

Taking an already fun game and making it more fun is sometimes a tough thing to do, especially when it comes in the form of DLC.  We’ve seen dozens of games go the DLC route this generation with add-on content that in some cases has been terrible in what it provided to the player. There’s honestly nothing worse than paying an additional $5 or $10 for some add-on content after you spend $60 on a game only to think about how you would’ve been better off buying a sub from Subway with that money.

SSX Receives Some Old-School DLC (New Map + Character Pack)

After teasing us EA and the SSX development team have come through in the end with the reveal of the first major piece of DLC released for SSX.  As you may recall last week we saw the release of a slightly cryptic puzzle piece image which hinted at a possible classic SSX DLC course complete with fireworks and the audacious track design which made the classic SSX games so good.

SSX May Be Going Old-School In A Future DLC Pack

Earlier this year EA made all of us eat crow with the release of SSX, a game which in my view managed to do the series justice in nearly every possible way.  The HD version of SSX may not have been an exact replica of the earlier installments in the series, but it nonetheless carved out its own identity which of course was focused on pulling off extreme tricks in elaborate environments.

SSX [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Taking the elements that the series is known for and injecting a modern day approach, SSX is the obvious evolution for the series and in the process it’s an incredibly fun game.  The game may not boast the same colorful or in-your-face approach as it did in the PS2 era, but there’s still plenty of character and more than enough moments to pull off massive tricks so longtime fans of the series should be happy.  Featuring an almost ingenious approach to featuring competitive online matches, SSX has the goods as it’s not a dudebro snowboarding game but instead is simply SSX brought forth to a new generation.

The Pros:

+ Trick system feels good and is more than capable of allowing gamers to enter a complete state of trick Nirvana.

+ The world may be tame in some respects but it still has an arcade feel and a nice dangerous element that kept me on my toes.

+ Online mode is the stuff that legends are made of.  Totally unobtrusive, integrated brilliantly, and it accomplishes what it sets out to achieve.

+ DJ Atomika is back, or at least makes a cameo.

The Cons:

- The Deadly Descent events are a bit too much trial & error which breaks the flow of the game.

- Doing simple ground based trick moves to link combos doesn’t feel as satisfying as it did in earlier SSX games.

Video games are supposed to be fun but it’s kind of rare these days to play a game that right off the bat has a pure sense of fun and enjoyment. I’m not saying that all games are either a bore to play or anything like that, but with some titles there’s a warm up period of sorts in which the basics are doled out to the player in a usually boring tutorial or it simply takes one or two levels to see all the cool stuff finally kick in.

Online Snowboarding Never Seemed As Cool As It Does In SSX [Video]

I know most people haven’t exactly pushed it to the back of their minds, but at the end of February we’re getting a new SSX game. After waiting and waiting for what seemed to be like forever, EA has finally given us a SSX game for the HD consoles that looks like it could reach the same addicting levels of fun that many of us had while playing the old-school SSX games. Over the past few months EA has shown a decent amount of footage for SSX, some of which has been documented on Shogun Gamer, and now we have a new SSX video feature detailing the social elements of the game.

SSX Gets A Slight Delay and a Glorious New Trailer

I have some good news and some bad news concerning EA’s forthcoming SSX reboot. The bad news is that the game has once again been delayed ever so slightly by a few weeks and will instead drop in late February.  The good news however is that EA and the SSX dev team has released a simply stunning new gameplay video that shows us once and for all that the new SSX is definitely bringing the goods.

Latest SSX Video Shows More Deadly Descents And Big Air Opportunities

EA has gone and released yet another behind-the-scenes video for SSX and once again I think it may become my most anticipated game for the first half of 2012.  In one way my excitement is due to my constant desire for a new snowboarding game but as a whole EA has really gone all out with the new SSX entry and it looks to have to a nice balance of natural elements with the right dash of arcade pizzazz.

Take A Quick Tour Through The Regions Of SSX [Video]

At this point EA has almost completely turned around the fan reception on the SSX reboot since the game looks good. Seriously, I know I was a hater of the apparent dudebro direction the new SSX title was going in, but after seeing the game evolve over the last few months and then getting some hands-on time with it I’m all but sold on the title, and that’s not just because I need a new snowboarding game in my life.

SSX Is Definitely Back In Form With This New Video

After being extremely worried that something we’ve diligently waited for was going to be a mess, the new SSX game looks about as sexy as a video game can get.  Ever since E3 rolled around this year the team at EA Vancouver have proved that they’re taking the right steps in making a modern SSX game with a few new bells and whistles thrown in for good measure.

SSX Hands-On [PAX Prime 2011]

The whole drama concerning EA’s SSX revival has been well documented on Shogun Gamer in the past.  It’s not too uncommon for some games to be thrown through the ringer due to common gamer fear and misconception but SSX was a game that was almost completely ostrichided from the get-go, somewhat for legitimate reasons.  I myself haven’t been the biggest cheerleader for SSX since it was first shown last December, but during the last few months my view has changed and now I’m officially ready to bow before EA Canada since SSX could end up being everything we want it to be.
