The Studio Conundrum Of Sony

Seeing things evolve and change over time is expected since it’s part of our culture.  Such evolutionary changes are of course present in the world of business since consumer tastes or hot trends will often dictate how things are both created and presented to the masses, sometimes resulting in the next big thing surfacing or an embarrassing flop being thrown our way which won’t be forgotten any time soon.  Companies doing the things they do may forever remain mysterious and perhaps unpredictable to us, but in the case of Sony the company is almost making a notorious name for thems

Starhawk Developer Lightbox Interactive To Issue Layoffs, Potential Studio Closure Inbound [Update 2]

Some rather sad news has surfaced today which may sting hard amongst those in the PlayStation 3 camp.  Official news hasn’t come in through the expected sources, but word has it that Starhawk developer LightBox Interactive will be issuing major layoffs and could be on the cusp of closing entirely in the next few days.

Starhawk [Review]

Overall Feeling:

In a rare occurrence these days Starhawk manages to do something truly creative in the multiplayer genre which results in a fun and captivating experience.  A few of the finer points of Starhawk may be riddled with some balancing issues or players that are inept as to battlefield tactics, but the build and battle mechanics results in constantly evolving matches that are unlike anything I’ve played before.  The deep multiplayer mode combined with a well thought out single-player campaign and fun laden co-op missions results in a game that is basically the epitome of what games should be: pure fun.

The Pros:

+ Build and battle works tremendously well and creates a unique vibe in the game and every battle.

+ The art design may not be totally pleasing to the eyes but visually Starhawk gets the job done through crisp visuals and nice effects work.

+ Single-player campaign thankfully bucks the trend of being on training wheels as it provides unique scenarios and an enjoyable experience.

+ Sound design and music is superb as its Warhawk but taken to the next level i.e. film level goodness but in a video game.

The Cons:

- There aren’t game ruining balancing issues, but certain elements such as the tanks need to be tweaked ASAP.

- Ground battle doesn’t feel floaty or pointless, but it does lack a distinct impact and feeling.

- Art design has a few sore spots as it’s beautiful in some areas and not so great in others.

ShogunGamer.com Rating :

Back in the day as I like to call, roughly twenty years ago, multiplayer games used to be unique in a sense.  The whole concept of doing some single-player action and then all of a sudden partaking in a CTF or Team Deathmatch mode with a buddy or a bunch of strangers was something that almost was as powerful and groundbreaking as playing a game rendered in full 3D for the first time – it was so damn unbelievable that our minds really couldn’t process it at first.

Starhawk Interview With Senior Producer Harvard Bonin [GDC 2012]

So far I’ve been continually impressed with Starhawk for a few major reasons. First off, it’s nice to play a game in which the vehicles don’t take 30 minutes to master or result in scenarios such as a fighter jet doing an immediate nosedive after stepping into the cockpit. The somewhat simple pick-up-and play nature of Starhawk is indeed attractive but so is the depth the game provides through the build and battle techniques and general battlefield strategy.

Starhawk Co-Op Mode Hands-On [GDC 2012]

Sometimes I may lament about how modern multiplayer gaming is sometimes going in circles with games that are focused too much on the wrong elements, but I would be a hypocrite to say that I don’t enjoy playing multiplayer games here and there. While I’ll admit that I’m a bit picky about what I play, I really can’t help but feel satisfied upon being a would be Tier 1 soldier or playing general to my fellow teammates as I lead them on a quest to glory.

TL;DR - Feb 22 - ME3, Kojima, Game Gear

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who provided feedback on Facebook. You’ll notice I’ve taken your feedback into consideration and revamped the major point of contention with the readers: The ungodly titling convention. Hopefully the new format it a little more palatable.

Today was chalk-full of big announcements what with the release date of Borderlands 2 confirmed via a new trailer, and a teaser site promoting a collaboration between Capcom, Namco/Bandai, and Sega. But there were still a couple of other things I wanted to touch on.

Starhawk Gets A Release Date + More Beta Details

Today is a good day for Starhawk fans since Sony has finally revealed when gamers can take to the skies of alien planets and blast each other in intense quasi RTS action.  As expected, Starhawk will come out this Spring exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and gamers will be able to pick the game up on May 8th, just in time for the start of the mid-year release dry spell that usually exists in the gaming biz.

Uncharted 3 Is Going To Have A Nice Bonus For Starhawk Fans

I normally don’t make a big deal out of when a game goes gold (final retail prints are being made), but I will make an exception for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.  Not only are we getting ever so closer to the November 1 release of Uncharted 3, but today Sony has announced that copies of the game will come with an added bonus: a voucher for the Starhawk multiplayer beta.
