Tron: Evolution

Propaganda Games reportedly has been closed [RUMOR]

Today is just one of those grim days in the video game industry that no matter what happens will just be a sucky day. There could be double rainbows across the world or some newfangled tech development and things will still be crappy. The reason for such a grim attitude today is because reports are coming in that Propaganda Games (Turok, TRON: Evolution) has been closed by Disney Interactive.

TRON: Evolution - Battle Grids [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Developer n-Space has done a tremendous job at creating and replicating the core traits of the TRON universe and giving gamers a whole bunch of Grid Games that offer nothing but pure enjoyment. Getting into the seven different Grid games is easy and all of them have unique gameplay mechanics that feel fully realized instead of being half-baked and thrown in for the sake of it. TRON: Evolution – Battle Grids is so fun that if it was on the PS3/Xbox 360 and featured Trophies and online play it would instantly be my GOTY.

The Pros:

All of the Grid Games offers something interesting as no one game is alike, both in how it controls and what sort of things the player can do. For what could’ve been a fluff mode, the Story Mode is actually enjoyable and isn’t just a training mode for the individual Grid challenges. Combining the look of the original TRON and the new style found in TRON: Legacy, Battle Grids is a visually eye catching game that doesn’t falter under the hardware constraints of the Wii. Up to four other people can play the game at once. It has Light Cycles.

The Cons:

The Grid Tanks mode is kind of meh from a control and gameplay perspective. Not being able to play online is a bit of a downer. Would’ve been nice if you could actually see the Light Cycles get Derezzed in the arena battle via something like a replay or small pop-up window.

We already know that the Game Grid can be a dangerous and somewhat oppressive place, as evident by the adventure featured in TRON: Evolution and TRON: Legacy.

TRON: Evolution [Review]

Overall Feeling:

TRON: Evolution isn’t a perfect game but it manages to offer a TRON worthy experience that hardcore fans of the series should appreciate. The game stumbles a bit as the platforming and combat have some issues, but things aren’t incredibly broken and the game doesn’t feel like it was haphazardly compiled. With a rather addicting online mode, TRON: Evolution is a game that I think TRON fans should check out as it gives the majority of things we would want out of a TRON game: breathtaking visuals, an easy to follow plot and some cool action.

The Pros:

Developer Propaganda Games has done a terrific job of recreating the world of TRON: Legacy and adding some cool new elements to it. Graphically the game has some minor issues, but everything has a sharp clean look to it and I loved the glossy surfaces and Deresolution effects. Most of the levels are quite lengthy (in a good way) and all the levels are really diverse in terms of appearance. Combat is easy to get into and managed to make me feel like a Game Grid warrior.

The Cons:

Platforming controls feel a bit off sometimes which can lead to instant Deresolution. Both the single-player and multiplayer combat suffers from a lack of a lock-on button, which makes it have an even greater button smashing nature to it. There are a few environmental/platform puzzles in the game but as a whole TRON: Evolution could’ve used some additional things to offer variety to the player. Light Cycle stages are somewhat fun, but are far too linear. Certain character faces look like warped versions of their film counterparts.

TRON is something that’s beloved by quite a few gamers, for the obvious reasons of course. Being set inside a computer world in which video games are the main source of entertainment, TRON in a way is what gamers dream about – escaping to a fantasy world of games and sleek visuals. In the world of video games TRON has had modest success with the original arcade games in the 1980s being cult classics and the 2003 released PC title TRON 2.0 earning a strong following despite the few issues it had.

Exclusive TRON: Evolution Interview (PS3/Xbox 360)

Games based on films have always resulted in products that are often less than stellar.  Sometimes we get a few products that were admirable efforts (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) but then we get games that just hit the absolute bottom of the barrel (Terminator: Salvation, Wanted: Weapons of Fate).  Sometimes it’s not really the fault of the developers for the less than cinematic video games we receive since often they’re under restricted budgets and deadlines which are far from the norm.

Exclusive TRON: Evolution - Battle Grids Interview (Wii)

We’ve already gotten the lowdown on the PS3/Xbox 360 version of TRON: Evolution but that isn’t the only TRON game being dished out in conjunction with TRON: Legacy.  Also set to drop is the Wii exclusive TRON: Evolution – Battle Grids.  Of course just like movie games, the history of 3rd party action games on the Wii hasn’t been too hot lately. So to some TRON: Evolution – Battle Grids may have a steep hill to climb to prove itself to the Wii gamers out there.

ShogunGamer News Wrap-Up: Sept. 6 - Sept. 10

So far the month of September is off to a good start thanks to a bevy of announcements made at PAX Prime 2010 along with other juicy gaming news tidbits.  Hell, who the would’ve thought that in the first week of September we would have actual hard hitting Duke Nukem Forever news, persistent rumors of a Mortal Kombat arcade remake and info on scenarios cut from Resident Evil 5?

Take a peek behind the scenes of TRON: Evolution [Video]

As much of a TRON fan as I am, I’m very apprehensive about TRON: Evolution, the upcoming video game tie-in for TRON: Legacy.  I definitely want to see the world of TRON represented with gorgeous HD visuals, but after playing countless movie tie-in games, perhaps too many for my own good, I’m of course wary that TRON: Evolution will actually be good.

The Collector's Edition announcements continue with TRON: Evolution

At this point my fandom of TRON has been well documented on the site. I absolutely adore the world of TRON ever since I saw the original film as a young lad and TRON: Legacy is easily my most anticipated film of the year.  With 2010 being the year of TRON amongst the various realms of geekdom, the franchise will of course have a big impact in the world of gaming, which is rather fitting given the context and inspiration of TRON.

TRON: Evolution Hands-On [E3 2010]

If any of you have been following the site for some time and have read my rubbish you probably know that I’m a huge TRON fan.  In fact most of the Shogun staff are huge fans of TRON but I’m probably the most hardcore out of the bunch.  If a full replica TRON suit was available, of the original or the sleek & sexy new one, I guarantee I would have that thing in my apartment day 1 of release proudly displayed on a mannequin which would stand next to the TRON poster I have in my apartment.
