Ubisoft Reveals Price/Date For Call of Juarez Gunslinger

Ubisoft is giving gamers a taste of the Old West once again via the forthcoming PSN/XBL/PC title Call of Juarez Gunslinger.  Yet another entry in Techland’s/Ubisoft’s Call of Juarez series, Gunslinger sees the franchise returns to its roots once more by having a tale set in the 1800s as opposed to the modern day drug cartel battles found in the somewhat disappointing Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons Is Detailed In New Walkthrough Video

Seeing an established developer branch out a bit is always nice, but we rarely see a studio go from a heritage of dark FPS titles filled with good old-fashioned ultra-violence and then suddenly do a platformer/puzzle title with a friendly exterior. Yet such a thing is the case for the new game from Starbreeze, Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons.

Black Knight Sword [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Not normal by any stretch of the imagination, Black Knight Sword strives to deliver an old-school action-platforming adventure in a rather unconventional setting filled with an ever shifting world and strange creatures.  The finer points of the combat system may be a bit flawed if not as much fun as they could be, but the visual approach in the game ultimately carries everything without leaving a very obvious void that was filled with substance in the hopes of saving things.  Even if you’re not a fan of Grasshopper Manufacture and the weirdness that accompanies their titles, Black Knight Sword presents an inventive take on a genre that sadly isn’t as prominent as it once was.

The Pros:

+  Artistic approach is unbelievable as it weaves in various elements such as folklore to create something that is entirely captivating.
+ Controls are really easy to get into and don’t have nagging issues like loose plat forming.
+ Story is vague but in a good way as it never feels cheaply done.

The Cons:

- Enemy encounters are missing a certain impact to them.
- Stages last anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes, but it’s disappointing that there are only five total in the main story mode.

Sometimes it can be fun to experience something not knowing what the full story or background is.  Being jerked around by constant riddles that have no payoff is a thing that most people don’t enjoy as it will only lead to disappointment (case in point the TV show Lost).  But even then I think there’s something inside us that doesn’t mind having to turn our brains on and pay attention even if we’re busy slashing stuff up, the victims of which are creatures who themselves are mysterious oddities.

DmC Demo Set For November Release

Judgment time may be near for Capcom’s reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise since gamers will be able to get a small taste of it prior to its January 2013 release.  After making public showings at events such as PAX Prime and the New York Comic Con, the new-age DmC will receive a rare pre-release demo next month.

Mass Effect 3: Leviathan DLC [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Leviathan provides an interesting new chapter to the ME3 story, and it's clear that a good deal of thought and care went into both the narrative and encounter design, but it doesn't match ME2's best efforts, most notably Overlord or Lair of the Shadow Broker. The DLC provides some beautiful new areas to explore, answers questions and fills in some of the rich lore of the ME universe, and challenges the player with slight innovations during some stand-out action scenes. Still, with a misstep in revealing information too early and no truly difficult decisions to make, it's a little short and a little plodding for the price tag.

The Pros:

+ Strong writing and voice acting, and some interesting, challenging twists on combat scenarios

+ Suitably creepy and mysterious, and well-paced overall with several ups and downs

+ New weapons, a new power, and decent payoff towards the main plot

The Cons:

- Coming this late after ME3's release considerably lessens the impact of the events in Leviathan—I wish I could have played it on release

- Slower-paced "detective" work is fine at first, but once the player has exhausted the eye-candy and grown used to the mystery, sections can drag on

- Probably a little pricey for the value, especially when compared to past DLC

Commander Shepard's exploits, male or female, have sold millions of copies of their games in our universe, safe-guarded billions of aliens in theirs, and have made headlines in both by including the ability to punch out reporters mid-sentence and explore cross-species, same-sex, and even old-fashioned hetero loving with accompanying make-out scenes. The intellectual property has been much-loved and simultaneously reviled, most recently by the outcry over ME3's original endings.

SSX - Mount Eddie DLC [Review]

Overall Feeling:

As a somewhat minimal add-on to the core SSX experience the Mount Eddie DLC succeeds in giving some exciting content to gamers as well as providing a much desired return to the classic SSX formula.  Mount Eddie may not be bursting at the seams with content as it only has a couple of events, but at the end of the day it’s still an amazing addition to SSX since it captures the same fun energy that the series had back in the PS2 era.

The Pros:

+ The price point is perfect for what’s offered.

+ Combining the tone of the new SSX with the classic era doesn’t feel too odd as both are evenly represented.

+ Mount Eddie itself has a balanced design which results in some amazing trick opportunities.

The Cons:

- Not having a Deadly Descent does feel a bit odd and like a missed opportunity.

- Half pipes are slightly under-utilized which is a shame.

Taking an already fun game and making it more fun is sometimes a tough thing to do, especially when it comes in the form of DLC.  We’ve seen dozens of games go the DLC route this generation with add-on content that in some cases has been terrible in what it provided to the player. There’s honestly nothing worse than paying an additional $5 or $10 for some add-on content after you spend $60 on a game only to think about how you would’ve been better off buying a sub from Subway with that money.

Xbox Live Avatar's Will Soon Be Going Weaponless

If you’re one of the few Xbox 360 gamers out there that simply loves having an Avatar and buying items for it then I have some bad news. As of January 1st all existing Avatar titles that come in the forms of guns will be taken off of Xbox Live and no items of such a nature will be released on the store hence forth. So yeah, no more guns for your Avatar.

The Evolution of Xbox (or Why I’m Okay with Service Fees)

Earlier in the week Xbox 360 received its third major Xbox Dashboard update. Once again with this year’s “Fall Update” we got an upgrade to the visual style of the console’s home screen and menu navigation, which brought me around to thinking about how much has changed in the world of gaming since the inclusion of online services, specifically with Microsoft and its Xbox Live service.

Microsoft Unveils Their New "Xbox Live TV" Lineup.

Microsoft today finally revealed what Xbox 360 owners can expect when they launch their new feature of providing a slew of live and on-demand programming from an impressive assortment of TV and cable networks along with some programming that was exclusively available only via the World Wide Web.

Joining Hulu Plus and Netflix will be some cable network powerhouses such as HBO Go, the SyFy Channel, and Bravo Network along with some web orientated entertainment providers such as YouTube, Crackle and Dailymotion.

Train Frontier Express [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Train Frontier Express may sound like a complete bore since it’s a train sim/creation game, but the title is nothing but pure joy in raw form.  The game may not be the most visually pleasing title out there, but building a city or an elaborate rail system is easy to do and more importantly feels extremely satisfying.  With a good amount of content to utilize and a multiplayer mode that allows user-created tracks to be saved for later enjoyment, Train Frontier Express is an easy going yet highly engaging title that deserves to be checked out if you’re fond of trains or building virtual worlds.

The Pros:

+ There’s a ton of content in the game and it’s all easy to access.
+ Building stuff is easy and extremely intuitive.
+ Riding around in a train is actually fun and it is nice to take in the world you’ve created.

The Cons:

- Movement speed for the tool cursor is a bit too slow.
- Being able to have a bit more variety in the structures would’ve been nice (more buildings and the ability to create bridges).

One of the more terrific things about this generation beyond the obvious jump in graphics and new ways we can play games (Kinect, mass multiplayer gaming) is that indie developers can release whatever they want via the wonders of digital distribution.  Indie developers may never have a sure fire hit on their hands upon releasing a homegrown effort on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live Arcade, but they can still see their dreams become a reality if they have the tech know-how and the passion to see their project through to the end.  Since it’s relatively easy for small developers
