Canadian Video Game Awards Winners

Yesterday saw the return of The Canadian Videogame Awards, for the second year in Vancouver (accompanying Fan Expo) and its fourth annual run (in total). The show was bigger and better than ever, running much more smoothly then we experienced last year and with a greater focus on the hype of it all. Participation from the audience was encouraged, and the whole thing just felt a little more loose and fun than last year.

Link to the Past Receives a Sequel [Nintendo Direct]

This morning Nintendo resumed their new trend of direct-to-consumer release information via another installment of their “Nintendo Direct” series. Basically a online webcast in the vein of a press conference that all fans of Nintendo can join online. This video detailed Nintendo’s plans moving forwards for the Nintendo 3DS, year of Luigi, and the Wii U. Why is another Nintendo Direct worth writing about? Well, because this one featured information about a new Zelda game and Earthbound’s plans to come to NA.

April Duels II - First Day, Standings, Day 2 Schedule

For those of you late-night streamers, April Duels II continues online in the Salty Suite (which should be on-air shortly if you follow the link to the Canada Cup stream #2). For everyone else, consider the day ended, and this your brief wrap up and the current standings!

Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon

Overall Feeling:

Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon is a “Summer Blockbuster” of a video game. While you don’t walk away with anything of substance or any real lasting effect from the game, the enjoyment you get out of it is worth the cost of admission. As long as you’re not expecting deep game play, character development, or a compelling story-line, you’re sure to be happy with this particular 3DS purchase.

The Pros:

+Fun and interesting game play

+Unique combat mechanic that never really gets old

+Inventive boss battles beyond the “hit me three times in the weak-spot” tedium

The Cons:

-3D doesn’t really add anything to the game

-Some progression of Luigi would have been nice (he’s still terrified of his own shadow after clearing multiple mansions?)

Luigi has been a character that’s lived in his brother, Mario’s shadow for nearly three decades now. Sure, he’s had the odd outing of his own, most notably Mario’s Missing and Luigi’s Mansion, but at the top of this year Shigeru Miyamoto promised us this would be Luigi’s year. The focus, for once, is on the perpetual “player 2” this year, and it begins with a sequel to what is (easily) the best game that Luigi has ever stared in: Luigi’s Mansion.

Klei Entertainment: The Blade and The Bonsai

Unfortunately Corey Rollins (Shogun Gamer Editor-in-Chief and Klei Entertainment Community Manager) was not able to join this afternoon’s presentation of Klei’s panel “How We Created Mark of the Ninja Without (Totally) Losing Our Minds; hosted by Jeff Agala and Jamie Cheng. However, thankfully, I was able to on behalf of the site. (Corey will be getting in later this evening; you needn’t worry about him… at least not yet).

StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm [Review]

Overall Feeling:

Heart of the Swarm does what every good expansion/sequel to a Blizzard title (or game in general) should. It expands on the original concepts, without killing the reason we fell in love with it in the first place, and brings something new to the table. At first glance, the changes to the competitive gaming (easily the biggest part of the game for most gamers) seem subtle, but after playing with the new units for a bit, it’s easy to see just how drastically the game has been changed for all levels of gamers.

The Pros:

+Improvements to the play and feel of the campaign mode.

+New units drastically reshape the gameplay in competitive, with subtle tweaks to the play-style.

+Top-tier production value that we’ve come to expect from Blizzard.

+Some of the most visually impressive gameplay and cinematics in the RTS genre.

The Cons:

-F*ck the Zerg.

Does anyone else feel the connection between Blizzard Entertainment and Wolverine? Seriously, it’s been bothering me all week… Every time Blizzard comes out with a new trailer, a new game, an expansion, or whatever I hear, in my head, “We are Blizzard, and we’re the best at what we do and what we do is…” roll the title and display whatever it is they are showing off that particular day of the week.

Bungie Shows Us Their Destiny

After opting to forgo their almost pre-determined path of being the latest development studio to enter the yearly installment route, Bungie has finally unveiled their new project.  Over three years in the making, Destiny is the latest FPS from the makers of Halo and it could go on to become the next big thing in the world of gaming. Either that or it’ll be this generation’s equivalent to Daikatana.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2 Official Cast Announcements/First Set Pic + Comprehensive Cast Roster [UPDATED]

We can finally put some rumors and our internal fears to rest seeing as how Warner Bros. have officially announced some of the talent that will be rounding out the cast for season 2 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy. As you may recall, last week saw a huge wave of info hit as the series began production, some of which included key cast members not returning while completely new faces joined the project. Now WB has announced some old faces will return to the world of Mortal Kombat once more alongside with some rather exciting new talent.

Energy Hook Debut Trailer Shows Intense Action and Thrills

Late last month a game was released that totally took me by surprise. No, I wasn’t taken aback by an obvious heavyweight like Dishonored as it was instead the small PlayStation Mobile game Sixty Second Shooter Deluxe that had me completely hooked in every regard. You can check out my review of SSSD to learn the finer points of what made the title so addicting, but the big news is that developer Happion Laboratories has just revealed their follow-up project.

A Deadly Assassin Joins The Cast Of Injustice: Gods Among Us

A deadly assassin has joined the cast of Injustice: Gods Among Us that may be familiar both to comic book fans and past players in the Mortal Kombat series.  While MK co-creator/NetherRealm Studios creative lead Ed Boon has been up to his old tricks by teasing character reveals via Twitter, which has included things such as Reese’s Pieces and Swamp Thing comics, we finally have a character reveal today that isn’t quite as surprising as we all hoped it would be.
