Could we be about to pay for PSN?

Looks like Sony are planning to introduce subscriptions to PSN for the start of the 2010 fiscal year. Kaz Hirai (SCE CEO) was quick to confirm that the bulk of PSN's services will remain free, such as multiplayer. However, a premium level account will be made available for those willing to pay a little in order to receive access to additional services.

The whole subscription thing will probably just be for DLC, rental services and things like Qore. I was amazed at how many sites did the whole "oh no, you're going to have to pay for PSN." That's never going to happen and I think Sony will never charge gamers to play online at all.

Agreed, a quick look at the comments on GS shows just how few actually read the article. Still, I do love to draw in the crowds with my fearful topic titles (titles that you have changed!). Well played... Tongue out

If the content is better then what's on the PSN for free right now, I would have no problems paying for better stuff. I would be pissed if they decided to charge for things that are currently free. But as everyone said above, that's very unlikely.

You're paying for a quality service. Provided I feel that what I'm paying for is of value to me, I have no problem handing over a little extra money to Sony. Whilst I've never signed up to Xbox Live, considering what you're getting, it's a small price tag - if you plan to use the service more than one or twice a month.

I've seen a few folks express fears that Sony will slowly merge their "free" services with their premium packages, but I don't see Sony making that sort of move. The backlash from consumers could be massive. Currently, Sony's plans are the next logical step in the life-cycle of PSN - offering premium content to those willing to fork out a little extra.

Just so long as they keep their hands off my Dragon Age DLC!

It's good they're going to charge for a premium subscription. Depending on what "services" this premium subscription offers, I'll have no problem paying for it. If like Ian said, it will be services like Qore, then no. I'm not some rich boy that needs something to invest money on, and I believe the free Internet can provide all those videos and articles Qore does. I guess it'll be things like Home stuff too, but I care less about Home. Don't we have our Shogun Gamer community?? Who needs Home?? I can't believe there's someone willing to pay for some virtual clothes. Why don't you buy clothes for you instead?

if they do it then you either pay it or you dont. say all you want but Sony is dying to charge to play MP, etc. Money is money and if they ever charge for such things then PS3ers can either pay it or dont and my guess is that most will pay.

I remember back at the start of my time at high school, everybody was into Habbo Hotel. It was just a simple meeting site, however you could buy things such as furniture to decorate your room with - each item costing £1. Never underestimate the ability of a consumer to blow their money.

Provided their price was on a par with that of MS' I certainly would. I have no problem paying for a service - but only if that service is an improvement over the original, and free, service. Still, if Sony do decided to charge all users of PSN, at some point in the future, there's not a whole lot you can do about. As you say, pay or don't.

I dont think so, this is something different, since Xbox live gold was never free people knew they had to pay to play, if sony charged for online than i doubt alot of people will pay cuz it WAS free and then it wont be, its a different story.

Indeed.

Silver is free and Gold you pay. What you get with Gold is the ability to play MP, have a group chat up to 8 people and they all can be playing different games at the same time, early access to demos, use Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, Last FM and get access to play 1 vs 100. To me its worth paying extra to get goodies. Majority of X360 owners pay the yearly and because of that Sony will look to eventually to do the same because as I stated earlier, majority of PS3 owners will be willing to fork over the money as well.

I would pay to have the same cross game chatting, instant updating trophies / achievements etc that 360 has. ALSO demos for EVERY GAME.

Why isn't there a Fallout 3 multiplayer?? Imagine 1 vs. 100, the person alone having one of those mini nuke launchers, oh so beautiful.

We'll have to wait and see just what Sony plans, but should their premium service(s) appeal to me, I'll bite.

1 vs 100 is a trivia game show not an actual 1 vs 100 battle beat down

So we went from discussing the PSN to 1 vs. 100.

Having been subjected to an episode of the acutal show, I knew 1 vs 100 was a trivia game. However, even I could not have forseen what was to come.

I'm curious to see what their "plans" are for a premium service. I'll pay if it seems fit for the bill.

60% of X360 owners also subscribe to Gold and XBL have generated well over one billion dollars. This is what Sony is looking at. They are not going to leave that kind of revenue on the floor. It is safe to say that at least 50-60% PS3 owners will subscribe to any premium service Sony may offer and that will be enough to generate a serious new cash flow for them.

I just want to hear what they plan to add for this premium serivce. I hope it is worth it and isn't a bunch of stuff that I won't use.

Fact.

In their last prresitation, they estimate the PS3 (in terms of console sales) will be profitable in 2011...TWENTY ELEVEN.

They want the monies, and if I was them I would too! Plus I want demos for EVERY game and I want Cross Game voice chat!

It'll also be interesting to see Sony's pricing strategy. Will they undercut MS to offer the cheaper product, or will they charge more - trying to create the image of superiority/premium service in contrast to that of MS. They could, of course, just set the price as the same for a gold XBL account.

Ya like Sith said. Sony is leaving money on the table. And I mean A LOT of money. So of course they are considering the option of charging for it.

I hope that they give you the option to pay yearly for the premium pack, while keep the current one for free. And depending on what the premium pack will contain, like I said in my last in-topic post, I will agree on paying it or not. And if they charge for online play, which is my worst fear, then it's very probable I'll end up paying for it. But I highly doubt they'll charge for something that was already free, like Dan said.
