It's a start. I'm not sure how much I'll use it because that seems like it would greatly disrupt the flow of a game. But I remember someone one here really wanted this feature so...CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
I'm still waiting for in game voice chat, though.
Besides text chat 2.70 will also upgrade friends list options by allowing you to "Sort your friends via their online status" (Can't we already do that?) and letting you attach bigger files to messages. While also giving you the option to back up video files that you purchased through the Playstation Store on to an external hard drive.
EDIT: The update is online now.
Now I really need a keyboard or something. Messages take forever to type with the controller.

I haven't had time to read personal reviews on the PS3 keypad thing yet...It sounds cool but I need to research it a bit. Anyone got one?
I tried it out while playing RE5 yesterday and its cooler than I thought it would be but I was still right about it disrupting the flow of the game. You cant really have a long conversation while playing a game since the other person can respond immediately. So you will be left with either choosing to stop playing for five or ten minutes or not respond for awhile. I just want to be able to talk and play at the same time.
It is a step in the right direction but like ninja said it just stops the flow of the game and/or the conversation. I hope soon they will do the same thing but with voice chat and tha tyou can have that many people talking at the same time. It would up the 360 party system because it only allows up to 8 people and Sonys would allow up to 16 at a time.
Text chat is cool for now but how many people are going to use it when they come out with voice chat? They should have skipped this & used the time & money to develop voice chat. BTW I used it with 5 other people, not it game, & it's kinda cool. We set up a game of CoD4 for next week lol.

Typing with a controller does suck to say the least lol. I wonder if you can just use a USB keyboard instead?

I just got the update today but haven't really had a chance to use it.
I've used a Keyboard before but I hate the wire LOL. I also hate putting down the controller every time I want to send a message.
And on a total side note, I always feel like such a dick complaining about stuff like "I hate when I have to put the controller down to send a message" LOL. Just in the big picture of things such a trivial thing to complain about...
...but seriously it sucks and i want to get a controller keypad ahah.
WOOT! I was reading about this earlier thanks for posting it in here. I was hoping for voice chat to. But like you said, It's a start. The buddy list update is nice. Just the other day I was scrolling through my buddy list thinking "jeez, I don't even have that many friends and this is annoying to scroll through." I'll have to grab this later tonight!
