I think this may be a first for a major console game, but Sony has announced that they are releasing the multiplayer mode of Killzone 3 as a separate stand-alone mode on the PlayStation Store next week. Featuring all the content found in the full game, the Killzone 3 multiplayer release will also be a free-to-play title as it’ll initially be free to download with no major fees. So if you haven’t already entered the battle between the ISA and Helghast then maybe now would be a good time to do such a thing.
Revealed on the latest episode of the PlayStation Blogcast, the Killzone 3 release will see the entire multiplayer mode released on the North American PlayStation Network for the low price of $0. There will be a slight catch however as there will be a level cap and once gamers hit that they have two options: continue playing and not be able to rank up or purchase the game for $15. So it may not be totally free, but if you aren’t really keen on acquiring XP or new weapons then you can pretty much have an accurate Killzone 3 multiplayer experience as all the multiplayer maps and game modes will be available.
Why such a release is being done now is somewhat odd but at the same time it’s an interesting move. The initial luster of Killzone 3 may have waned by now but the notion of releasing a multiplayer mode separate, have it be free-to-play, and have a price attached to it for those who want the “full” experience is something that I think could catch on amongst more publishers. Compared to having a game be focused on microtransactions or sparse maps since everything else is offered as DLC, receiving a full-on multiplayer mode from the get go is a better deal and even the $15 price tag isn’t that tough to swallow considering the overall content that’s there.
Perhaps this move is being done as a test by Sony to see how gamers react to such a thing or even better it could be a prelude to an ultimate Killzone 4 reveal in the coming months.
