The New Mortal Kombat Film Receives A Small Update

In case you forgot for some unimaginable reason there’s still a new Mortal Kombat movie in the works.  Announced late last year, Warner Bros. is indeed giving the MK series another go after the successful test run of Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Directed by Kevin Tancharoen (the same dude who did the gritty MK short film and MK: Legacy), the new Mortal Kombat film has been under the radar for what seems like an eternity so far.  We all know that the movie is happening, but rumors or more finite details have been hard to come by all around.

This may only be a small nugget of info in the grand scheme of things, but Kevin Tancharoen decided to give us a small update on the new MK film which includes confirmation of a classic MK character joining the flick.  For the past few months Kevin has been quiet on his Twitter account when it comes to official MK news, but yesterday the talented director decided to take a pic of the actual script for the film. Yes, we’re now in the era when taking a pic of a screenplay is a hot news item but when the film in question is a new MK flick I think there’s cause to be excited.

The pages Kevin decided to Tweet didn’t reveal much in the way of details but it did confirm that Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Jax will be in the film. Those three characters were obvious shoes-in due to their fandom and appearance in MK: Legacy but one other fan favorite character is entering the mix: Kabal. The masked member of the Black Dragon will be squaring off against Jax in the film based on the pic Kevin Tweeted which apparently will feature a bloody battle between the two.

The mere mention of blood in a MK movie has me hoping that WB takes a risk on the film and decides to go for a very hard PG-13 rating (decapitations, mild blood spatter) or simply go for what an MK movie needs: a hard R rating which makes no compromises at all. Seeing as how the MK film will reportedly draw from Kevin’s original MK short film it’s entirely possible we may receive the raw and ultra-violent MK feature film we’ve been waiting for.

This minimal update on the new MK movie may not be as groundbreaking as the first casting reveal, but it at least shows that the movie is still in production. It’s also cool to get a major character reveal since Kabal was one of the characters that both Kevin and fight choreographer Larnell Stovall wanted to include in MK: Legacy but couldn’t due to time and budget restraints.  There’s still no indication when the new MK movie will begin principle photography, but if it goes before cameras before December it’s possible we could see the movie be released late next Summer.
