Revealed in a way that was truly surprising, Injustice: Gods Among Us has already gotten a huge amount of buzz for a variety of reasons. First off it helps that the veteran team behind the Mortal Kombat games is crafting the super heroe based action of Injustice and secondly it’s just cool to see The Flash beat the living crap out of Superman once in a while. While we’ve only see a small sampling of the game so far, a new video has been released in advanced of the upcoming reveals that will be made at the SDCC later this week.
Opting to show that the game will be more than another brawler, this new Injustice video is devoid of gameplay but it does one important thing: it gives us a vibe of what the story will be like. It could’ve been easy for the team at NetherRealm to pull a fast one and just have an aliens invade Earth or Lex Luthor has gone mental yet again plot be the core narrative of the game, but instead we’re getting something much deeper.
While details have yet to be released, it appears that the heroes we know and love such as Batman and Superman may or may not be responsible for an event whose repercussions were felt worldwide. As you can see in the video below, humanity is joining together to possibly step up to the “gods” that walk amongst then. I doubt that Injustice will pull a swerve on gamers and have Superman be a baddie, but it still ought to be interesting to see why humanity suddenly hates their once cherished saviors and how the heroes will in turn react to such a development.
Stories in fighting games have never been a strong suit for the genre but the last Mortal Kombat game showed that an in-depth story can indeed be told. Reportedly said to feature a story that is double the size of that found in MK, Injustice could be one of the rare super heroes games this generation that favors actual substance amongst the constant flash and style it dispenses.
