Leaked Pics Reveal New PS3 Model

I’m having a moment of déjà vu as it suddenly seems like a mirror situation of 2009 is happening.  Just like what happened three years ago, some unofficial images have leaked of Sony’s latest PS3 SKU, which once again sports a slimmer design and a slightly new look to differentiate itself from past models.

In case you don’t remember, back in late July/early August of 2009 we were greeted with our first pics of the current PS3 model – which at the time was greeted with a massive amount of skepticism.  Despite seeing the box and various stages of the hardware on the assembly line, it almost seemed unreal that we were getting a new PS3 SKU, hence the déjà vu moment we’re encountering now.

Previously rumored at via FCC filings, Sony is apparently moving forward with a new PS3 SKU whose focus and purpose is kind of unknown at this point. Retaining a shape similar to the current PS3 model, this more petite PS3 features a ridged front which may or may not hide a more old-school disc loading tray as opposed to the automated one the PS3 currently uses.

These images, which are taken from a Brazilian tech blog, do seem legit – or at least as legit as the pics for the great PS3 leak of 2009.  Generally speaking it does seem odd that Sony would release yet another PS3 SKU, even with the big feature of it being smaller and perhaps running quieter than the current models do. In some ways this new SKU does follow what Sony has done in the past with the PS1 and the PS2, but will we see a true megaton with a PS3 price drop or will that only happen once the next PlayStation finally arrives.

As usual Sony is on complete ninja lockdown concerning this news so official details are still unknown. It is possible that Sony could do what they did in 2009 by announcing the new SKU at Gamescom, which thankfully for us will happen in less than a month.
