In less than a month we’re going to be to receive what could be a very special game for a whole bunch of reasons. Despite whatever feelings we may have on the current state of the franchise as it stands now, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron looks like one of the few games out there that is overwhelmingly badass looking. Developer High Moon Studios gave us an extremely solid first outing in the form of Transformers: War for Cybertron and being able to build on top of that foundation in a full-on sequel has me in complete giddy fanboy mode.
Since being unveiled we’ve seen quite a lot of what Fall of Cybertron is going to offer which includes fanboy pleasing things such as dinobots and a version of Megatron that isn’t a complete wimp. The game as a whole seems to be looking extremely good so far but one slightly sour point was the lack of co-op play for the story mode. Yeah, co-op play may feel forced in some games today (hi Resident Evil!), but who doesn’t want to roam around Cybertron with a buddy destroying stuff as a giant robot? It may suck that co-op play is out of action in FoC, but in place is a rather robust multiplayer mode which could finally give us the intense Autobot vs. Decepticon battles we’ve always wanted to have with our friends.
Multiplayer action was provided in the previous Transformers game, but in Fall of Cybertron High Moon has stepped their game up by allowing us to do one amazing thing: create our own Transformer. For the first time in a major Transformers game we can totally customize our character from top to bottom and create whatever we want except for things like characters from Beast Wars or bio-organic Transformers. Yeah, I’m still pushing for a Beast Wars game and will continue to do so until I’m a bitter old man.
Anyway, on top of the whole create your fantasy Transformer element the multiplayer action in Fall of Cybertron looks really good based on the trailer released today. Things were a bit basic and by the numbers in War for Cybertron, almost to the brink of tears when you think of the potential, but FoC rectifies that through sheer variety. This time out it appears that the battles will be more varied thanks to sections being built for the alt mode of the Autobots and Decepticons. So this time out there’ll be an actual purpose to driving around as a tank or car other than to look like a boss on the battlefield.
Perhaps we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment through expecting too much out of Fall of Cybertron, but based on what’s been shown so far it looks like High Moon has delivered the goods once again. Thankfully we won’t have to wait too long to know the answer for sure since the game will be released on August 21st for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
