Capcom Announces Remember Me, A New Sci-Fi Action Game With An Inception Edge

Gamescom has officially kicked off and shockingly Capcom has the first true surprise of the show since the company has announced a new IP.  It has been a while since we’ve seen the old Capcom of the previous generation make an appearance these days seeing as how the company seems more focused on releasing big games that are expected to net a big profit. But today the company has announced Remember Me, a sci-fi 3rd person action-adventure game created by the France based Dontnod Entertainment.

No, Remember Me isn’t based upon the sappy Robert Pattinson romantic drama of the same name that had twist-ending involving the 9/11 attacks as its instead a cyberpunk laced action game set on the streets of Paris in 2084.  Featuring core gameplay that revolves around navigating environments Uncharted style, the breakthrough element of Remember Me is that it’s basically the first game to actually attempt pulling an Inception.

For the folks who like to get deep with somewhat confusing storylines and scenarios you’ll be happy to hear that Remember Me revolves breaking into the minds of people to steal their memories or even alter them.  I’ll admit that it may not sound too original, but nonetheless it’s still interesting territory to approach in a video game and based on the gameplay video that was released today it appears that Dontnod is putting their own spin on things.

Remember Me may look like a mash-up of existing games as there’s a bit of Uncharted here, a small lace or two of Batman: Arkham Asylum, and perhaps a huge dash of Deus Ex depending on how you look at things, but when is that ever truly a bad thing?  The debut gameplay footage may look a bit too guided in some areas, remember this is a demo though, but the atmosphere is incredible and the visuals are pretty damn crisp.

Overall I’m happy to see Capcom take a chance publishing a game such as Remember Me and hopefully the project will get the full boost it deserves.  This console generation may be wrapping up relatively shortly, but it’s still good to see developers out there try to take a chance by creating an outside the box premise or even do something like provide a strong female protagonist as the lead, especially when her name isn’t Lara Croft.

Remember Me is currently scheduled to release on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in May 2013.
