In case you love watching guys cook massive meals with bacon or fake ditzy blondes playing with their dogs whilst wearing a bikini, then you may be happy to hear that Sony is releasing a dedicated YouTube app for the PS3 later today. It may be six years too late, but Sony has effectively pulled a Sega by announcing something cool and in turn decided to release it that very day as opposed to a week or even a month later.
Sony has yet to formally announce the YouTube app, but the folks over at the Verge have some the basic details which make it sound like the app may be worth the six year wait. Aside from allowing us to watch Epic Meal Time in between sessions playing Uncharted or Sleeping Dogs, the PS3 YouTube app will reportedly allow for full HD video (one would hope so), as well as the ability to access account subscriptions.
One other cool tidbit concerning this new YouTube app is that folks will reportedly be able to use a connected smartphone as a remote control. I don’t know if using an iPhone or Droid phone as a remote whilst watching YouTube on the PS3 will actually be a useful tool, but at least it shows that Sony is looking into the mobile space more and more as opposed to being as close minded as they once were.
Additional details on the PS3 YouTube app will likely hit later today but the basics of it are pretty straightforward: PS3 owners will have a dedicated YouTube app for free so they can enjoy silly cat videos whenever they want. The YouTube app will be available on the PlayStation Store later today so if you want to check out the latest videos from Shogun Gamer, Red Sun Gamer, or Megasteakman then be sure to download it and give it a go.
Yeah I'll have to agree with you Sphynx, its nice that some effort was put into releasing the app at this stage but oh boy is the quality bad. The search system is really odd, quality is so-so as HD videos aren't even playing on HD.
It's kind of odd that Sony and YouTube knocked it out of the park for the YT app for the PS Vita but the PS3 app turns out to be one of the worst things released to the public.
Hopefully some patches are released to fix the basic issues while some further tinkering is done to make the app easy to use.

When I finally uploaded the app, I was shocked. The search is time-consuming, and I won't buy a smartphone just to type searches in easier....The quality is atrocious, skipping halfway through a song. Sony, you did good by thinking this up (extremely late) but change the quality, because I can't.
Not to mention it won't let me sign in to retrieve my favorites, which were incredibly hard to find in the first place -_-'
