After going through the typical announcement cycle that publishers like to follow this generation, EA has finally released the first gameplay video for Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel. The third installment of the AoT series sees two new protagonists step up in addition to a bigger focus on gritty gameplay with a cinematic edge compared to the previous entries which were almost plain in their execution.
Of course to establish the gritty and more serious tone of The Devil’s Cartel we have a debut trailer which features gameplay footage while a beat catchy hip-hip song plays. I guess that’s kind of expected from the AoT series as it’s always been the long lost video game cousin of a Michael Bay movie – minus the whole Victoria’s Secret and annoying actors quotient.
Anyway, trailer tone aside the game does look rather good based on this first look. The team at Visceral Games Montreal has upped the action considerably as the power of the Frostbite 2 engine allows them to blow lots and lots of stuff up. Seriously, the chunks are flying so much that the team over at Criterion may be tempted to return to their roots to do a new Black game, which for those unfamiliar with it featured an orgy of particle and environmental effects going off amidst a sea of bullets.
Elements of Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel may not be new at all but the game does look like it’ll provide a decent action romp with the added bonus that you can play with a buddy. If the game is at PAX Prime later this month you can certainly expect both Casey and I will put the game through its paces and perhaps do a classic Salem & Rios high-five if the game is actually fun.
Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel will be released next March on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
