It would been easy for developer Techland to rest on their laurels seeing as how their open-world zombie game Dead Island was a commercial and critical hit, but the studio is trying something different with their next project. While not abandoning the Dead Island franchise, Techland is nonetheless pursuing other opportunities which include a fantasy based first-person action game. Yes, it may be time for some hack & slash action in a grim fantasy medieval backdrop.
Dubbed Project Hell, the origins of Techland’s new endeavor oddly enough lay in Dead Island. After creating a mod for Dead Island which featured sword attacks freezing zombies, the team at Techland thought such a thing was fun enough to pursue in even greater detail, albeit not connected to the Dead Island universe. So a small team within Techland was assembled to work on a prototype spun-off of this spell casting sword idea and the end result we have today is Project Hell.
The game may merely be a continued prototype as of now, but as per Techland’s announcement it’s apparent that the studio plans on continuing development of this project while they still can. As of now the game hasn’t been shopped to publishers and Techland is developing it completely independent of any outside sources, which could be the best possible route since it’s basis is a bit niche.

No major game details or possible platform announcements were made via the announcement blog, but Techland has promised to keep gamers in the loop as development continues. The question still remains though as to whether Project Hell will follow in the steps of the upgrade/stat heavy Dead Island or perhaps go for something along the lines of Dark Souls.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Dead Island but I have to admit that Project Hell does look interesting. If Techland can create a world that doesn’t seem too typical or outright gaudy then the game could be fun if the actual mechanics don’t become overly repetitive.
