The Grittiness Of The Old West Returns In Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

This may not be a complete surprise since the previous teases indicated as such, but Ubisoft and Techland have announced yet another installment in the Call of Juarez series. After receiving teases of an Ubi/Techland announcement earlier this week gamers and those in the “esteemed” games press put two and two together to deduct that another Call of Juarez was on the cards and today we have our first look at the title.

Ditching the attempts at showing us what a modern day cowboy would be like (no, such a thing isn’t a federal agent hunting dope dealers), Techland has gone back to basics with Call of Juarez:  Gunslinger. Sticking with the FPS trappings of the franchise, Gunslinger takes the action back to the Old West once again as gamers need to channel their inner Wyatt Earp or Seth Bullock to dispose of legends such as Billy the Kid and Butch Cassidy in what will surely be bloody shootouts that would make Sergio Leone a happy man.

A rather stylish and well done live-action teaser trailer has been released since we all know that gamers are more receptive to such a thing compared to actual gameplay. Ok, so maybe I’m being a tad sarcastic, but the Call of Juarez: Gunslinger teaser does a good job at instilling the ruthless Old West vibe along with proving that corsets from that era where the best thing ever.

Ubisoft has released a few scant in-game screens of what Gunslinger will provide to us and it looks like Techland is building on top of their previous foundations.  Early word has the gameplay basis of Gunslinger being reminiscent of Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood with more of an emphasis on upgrading player skills/stats.  If Techland can provide gameplay that doesn’t feel like it was developed for two months and release to the public then I might be there for when Gunslinger arrives. The FPS genre could certainly do with another Old West game and perhaps Gunslinger will be a nice game to spend some time with as we all wait for Rockstar’s next entry in the Red Dead series.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger will be released in early 2013 on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and the PC.
