The Star Wars franchise may officially be beyond the point of no return as far as its video game efforts are concerned. We may all love a good space battle or a lightsaber fight, but the Star Wars franchise is now traveling into a level of product cross-over/pure cash grab moment that may be completely unjustified.
By now you may be asking what has led to such a thing or if Star Wars fan are merely flipping out over nothing. However, when a crossover of Angry Birds and Star Wars is teased I think there’s reason enough for fans to have a bout of anger that make the debates about Jar Jar Binks look like nothing.
At first it was believed to be nothing but a joke, but it has been confirmed that Angry Birds developer Rovio is doing a Star Wars themed project of some kind. Details are still scarce, but a teaser image of a Angry Bird character dressed as a Jedi Knight has been released and it is definitely as soul crushing as it sounds.
The teaser image released today is counting down to a special announcement that’s set to be made at the Toys R Us located in New York’s Time Square. So with that tidbit in mind it could be possible this Angry Birds project is nothing more than a new line of Angry Bird toys/plushies modeled after Star Wars characters. That alone may still be enough to balk at with a face of utter disgust, but it may be easier to swallow than an actual Angry Birds game with a Star Wars theme.
The chances that we’ll soon play an Angry Birds game in which we’re flinging cutesy versions of Stormtroopers or Jedi Knights still hasn’t been shot down, but for the sake of not disrupting the force amongst millions of fans I hope that such a thing never comes to be. Maybe I’m in the minority in not wanting an Angry Birds Star Wars game, though such hatred is merely because we just deserve better than this.
We may have a new XBLA Star Wars game coming out and the potential hot mess that could be Star Wars 1313 so thing may be balanced out ever so slightly. But even then it’s just sad to see the Star Wars franchise to continuously go on a decline in the quality department as there’s absolutely no shame in how everything is marketed and what’s presented to us.
More details on this collaboration between Angry Birds and Star Wars will be announced on Sunday so until then we can just enjoy the image below.
