Comic books based on video games still seem to be a thing, at least as good marketing tools, as another Sony property is going the comic route. Following in the steps of Infamous and Uncharted, Sony has announced that their forthcoming survival thriller The Last of Us will receive a new comic book series.
Announced at the New York Comic Con this past weekend, The Last of Us: American Dreams comic series marks the first time Sony is teaming up with Darkhorse Comics. Previous PlayStation brand comic series have been under the DC banner, so Sony is branching out to team up with a new stable of creative partners.
Taking a note from other video games that have been adapted into comics, gamers will be able to get a glimpse of what the world was like before The Last of Us takes place. Opting to go the prequel route, gamers will be able to see what it was like for Ellie, the main female protagonist, to grow up in a destroyed world which not only is teeming with infected humans, but those who will do absolutely anything to survive.

Written by Neil Druckmann with art by Faith Erin Hicks, the comic adaptation of The Last of Us may provide an informative glimpse into the world Naughty Dog is developing. Following Ellie in her early days as a child ought to show just how tough the post-apocalyptic world is and show us an element that won’t be shown in the game. That potential narrative strand of goodness plus the rather unique take with the art may give us a comic book that isn’t an obvious commercial for the game.
For those who may not be interested in the comic version of The Last of Us, there are two key tidbits worth mentioning. First off, as of now The Last of Us: American Dreams is slated to arrive in Spring 2013, perhaps a sign that the game will drop around that time as well since it still hasn’t been given an actual release date/window. Besides that, Darkhorse will also be releasing an art book for The Last of Us filled with conceptual images and other such goodies created by Naughty Dog. A price hasn’t been given for The Art of The Last of Us, but I doubt it’ll cost as much as the leatherbound Uncharted 2 art book that was released a while back.
