News of developers shuttering or changing their focus may sadly be becoming an all too familiar occurrence and today news has broke that yet another developer is shifting gears. The news may not be as dire as the layoffs and subsequent move to mobile games that LightBox Interactive recently took, but developer Nihilistic has announced that the company will be going the digital route for the foreseeable future.
Best known for giving PlayStation Vita owners the would be killer-apps that are Resistance: Burning Skies and the forthcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, Nihilistic may not be a huge triple-A developer but they’ve nonetheless been affected by the recent shifts the industry has received. Reforming as nStigate Games, the company once known as Nihilistic will now focus on downloadable titles as well as making efforts in the mobile arena as well.
Considering the history of the studio, which includes Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects and PlayStation Move Heroes, I somewhat doubt that any gamers out there are disappointed or shocked over this news. The one noteworthy thing about the quasi phoenix moment for nStigate is that the company isn’t issuing any layoffs nor are they financially in the red. Say what you will about the quality of Resistance: Burning Skies, but it’s nice to see a developer make a transition and not have to issue pink slips to most of the staff.
Nstigate didn’t reveal what would be next for the studio so it’s currently unknown which digital platforms the studio’s next slate of titles will debut on. With how crappy the video game industry can be at times it’s nice to see some folks out there catch a break and have a second chance at making some cool games. So despite my hatred of Resistance: Burning Skies, I wish nothing but the best of luck to the folks over at nStigate.
