Our dreams may finally be close to becoming a reality since a game based upon the Fast & Furious franchise is seemingly upon us. Starting out as a mere street based racing film way back in 2001, the Fast & Furious franchise has gone on to become one of the premier action film franchises due to stories and scenes that are so dumb and insane that it’s hard not to find them appealing. Now the ever chiseled visage of Vin Diesel may be appearing in a new Fast & Furious game from none other than Activision. Yup, good old Acti is at it once again.
We may be two months away from Fast & Furious 6 hitting theaters, but apparently Activision is prepping a game to release alongside the movie. Likely the latest potential victim of both Activision’s marketing department and their Minneapolis studio, which focuses on licensed properties, a game based upon the Fast & Furious series, in particular Fast 5 and past entries, is in the works dubbed Fast & Furious: Showdown.
Yet to be revealed or even hinted at by Activision, the news of a Fast & Furious game comes from none other than a detailed listing on the EB Games Australia site. Making note of the co-op centric racing, either with a friend or A.I. companion, F&F: Showdown is apparently trying to meld the high-octane racing the series has been rooted in with the more action and heist oriented nature of the most recent films. How that combination will fare in the hands of Activision is anyone’s guess at this time.
The debut trailer for Fast & Furious 6
There’s a definite appeal for a game based on the Fast & Furious franchise as it could be the perfect melding of arcade and sim racing sensibilities. But in the hands of Activision I’m not so sure we’ll get anything more other than a barely serviceable game that is likely a step below cabinet arcade racing games.
With those in the know stating that Activision Minneapolis has a mandate for projects to have a sub $3 million budget and be developed in less than a year, chances are that Fast & Furious: Showdown will be nothing more than a game fans of the franchise can snicker about, whether it’s for making “I’m in your face” jokes or wondering when, if ever, the character of Han will finally arrive in Tokyo.
According to the EB Games Australia listing, Fast & Furious: Showdown will arrive on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U on May 22nd.
