Shantae Claus Is Coming To Town

The superhuman ultra-geniuses and masters of ludo-alchemy at Wayforward (the studio that brought you DuckTales: Remastered, Mighty Switch Force HD and a really good Contra game for DS that I can't seem to find anywhere) are back and ready to serve you a heaping plate of holiday gaming goodness right down your play-hole. So buckle up, buccaneers, because for just a couple of bucks you can swashbuckle your way through Sequin Land on Christmas Day with the Wii U version of Shantae and the Pirate's Curse.

Originally released earlier this year on the 3DS, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is the third title in the Shantae series and the follow up to Shantae: Risky's Revenge for DSiWare. While the first two games in the series are recommended experiences they're certainly not required to enjoy Pirate's Curse which stands on its own as a stellar example of contemporary metroidvania design.

One of the standout features of Pirate's Curse is its beautiful character portraits by MegaMan Zero and Azure Striker Gunvolt-developer Inti Creates. Wayforward has made a name for themselves by creating some of the best original casts of characters and never have they been realized with so much polish and nuance as in Pirate's Curse. But Shantae isn't the only present under the eShop tree this year that has Inti Creates' signature on it.

As a gesture of good faith from the masters of poor, poor Megaman's fate, Capcom has magnanimously unfurled its iron grip and lets spill forth a Christmas miracle.

It's no secret that the Game Boy Advance was one of the best systems for platformers of all kinds, but Megaman Zero was the leader of the pack. Developed by Inti Creates and Capcom, Megaman Zero was the return to action-platforming glory that Megaman fans of the early 2000s were begging for.

It saw three direct sequels on the GBA, two DS successors in Megaman ZX and ZXA, and paved the way for Inti Creates' close involvement with the franchise giving birth to Megaman 9 and 10. If we follow that family tree to present day, then we find ourselves at Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt. So. Inti Creates knows their stuff. Any fans of the current indie-platforming revival owe it to themselves to check out Megaman Zero; the game that showed the industry that there was still a demand for pixel-perfect, Nintendo-hard sidescrolling.

Alongside the release of Megaman Zero, and a handful of other Megaman games are available for discounted prices on both the Wii U and 3DS eShops for a limited time. And pick up Azure Striker Gunvolt while you're at it. Damn, that game's good.
