An Academy Award winning actor joins the cast of Predators

If you haven’t heard already due to living in a cave Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City) is producing a new Predator film based on a script he wrote a few years ago. But unlike his other projects Robert won’t be stepping in the directors’ chair as that honor goes to Nimrod Antal.

Since being announced in June we’ve been getting some tidbits about the movie such as the plot for the film which will follow a group of humans transported to the Predator home world so they can be hunted. All of these folks are highly skilled warriors ranging from a police officer, a prison inmate, a burly Russian and a drug cartel enforcer. This of course has the makings for a good ensemble cast.

It’s already known that Robert Rodriguez favorite Danny Trejo would be appearing in the film and this week it broke that actor Walton Goggins (The Shield) would be joining the cast as well in an unspecified role.  Now news has broke that joining those two fine actors will be Adrien Brody (The Pianist, King Kong) and Topher Grace (That Seventies Show, Spider-Man 3).  Brody will reportedly play the lead character who is known as “a hunter of men” while Grace will play an unassuming accountant who is actually a serial killer, basically Patrick Bateman in a Predator movie. While Brody is close to being locked into the film Topher’s involvement is still pending due to negotiations.

Rounding out the cast is Alice Braga (Red Belt) as a fierce female killer; Oleg Taktarov as a former Russian agent and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali as a man who doesn't fear death

Adrien Brody may not be the first person you think of to star in a sci-fi action movie but I’m not that worried with how he’ll fit in the film. The man is one hell of an actor which is why he won an Academy Award.  He may not have that over-the-top masculine look like Arnold did but I’m sure Adrien will bring something unique to the role.

Predators is set for a July 7, 2010 release.

adding Mr. Brody to the mix is an odd one. I dont see him as an action caliber actor. I would say that they was adding an A-list actor to give the movie some credibility but Brody hasnt done anything significant in a long time. Topher Grace can go straight to hell for his horrible Venom protrayal that was so bad that it caused several spontaneous wildfires across the country, destroying millions of acres of forest.

Yeah having Brody on board is probably to give the movie some credibility but this is Predator we're talking about and not some drama or "serious" action movie where people are expecting a certain level of quality.  Hell, I'm partially surprised the film just didn't pull an "Expendables" and have a cast of well known and loved geek/action movie actors. I think the cast so far is fine, Topher included, but I'm just more worried about how the Predators and the various creatures will look like. To me the Predators just seemed too big and bulky in the AvP movies compared to the original films. And since the new film has like an ultra Predator in it I'm worried that it's going to look like a dude in a suit or will be shot with quick cuts to avoid the shoddiness of the costume.
