An Actor Is Finally Chosen For Raiden in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

The steady stream of casting news for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth continues in the wake of actors Darren Shahlavi and Tahmoh Penikett joining the project as Kano and Stryker.  Today brings the news that one of Mortal Kombat’s most important characters has just been cast, and from the looks of things we have another amazing casting choice on our hands.

Actor Ryan Robbins has joined the cast of Mortal Kombat: Rebirth to portray Raiden, who we all know is one of the most powerful characters in the MK universe.  It hasn’t been detailed how Raiden will be adapted for the grittier world of MK: Rebirth, so for all we know Raiden could end up being the Police Commissioner or superior for Jax, Sonya and Stryker, which would make sense to me.  But MK fans may be happy to hear that a few teases have been made by those involved in the production of MK: Rebirth which has pointed to Raiden possibly being a full-on thunder god as he is in the games.  When Mortal Kombat: Rebirth was announced last month, it was somewhat quietly addressed that the series would have more of a fantasy side to it in tune with the games but since things are so hush-hush around the project no one really has a clue as to how crazy things will get in the series.

Actor Ryan Robbins

I’m not too familiar with Ryan’s work, but I’ve heard good things about his performances in shows like Caprica and Sanctuary.  I know that Raiden is one of those special MK characters is a make or break type deal for gamers, but with Ryan’s experience in fantasy driven projects along with having a nice rugged look, I think the casting is pretty on the spot.  The one thing I’m worried about is how Raiden will be adapted in Rebirth and whether or not he’ll have something similar to the iconic hat he wears in the video games.

Since the MK: Rebirth cast is growing, here’s the complete list of all the actors known to be in the project:

• Michael Jai White as Jax
• Jeri Ryan as Sony
• Tahmoh Penikett as Stryker
• Ian Anthony Dale as Hanzo aka Scorpion
• Darren Shahlavi as Kano
• Ryan Robbins as Raiden

Presumably more characters and actors will be announced in the next week or so seeing as how actors can’t help themselves from Tweeting about their latest gig.  So for my fellow MK fans out there, are you happy with the casting choice of Ryan Robbins as Raiden and with how the cast is shaping up so far?
