Sony recently announced to its investors that it will add 3D stereoscopic capability to the games on its PS3 gaming console via a future firmware update. The slides from the presentation can be found int he gallery below. You'll notice that "all PS3 units will be firmware-upgradeable to 3D," and that the company plans to lead the 3D market.Though no specific timelines were revealed, one slide shows they will be preparing for rollout in 2010 along with an indication that Sony will offer 3D-specific tools to developers of its games.
3D gaming is considered just part of a larger strategy from the company, as it also plans to bring out 3D movies on its Blu-ray format and make HDTVs more suitable to the display of such images. As a consequence, the firmware upgrade will force many to upgrade their other hardware to take full advantage of all 3D games and movies have to offer.
Sony also has plans to install 3,000 of its 3D theatre projectors into cinemas before the end of 2010.
Sony executives believe the PlayStation business can reach profitability by March of 2011, thanks in part to the planned 3D tech for its PS3 along with a Motion Controller that aims to cash in on the success pioneered by Nintendo's Wii console.
3D gaming has been pretty controversial and widely seen as a gimmick technology that usually just ends up giving you a headache. New TV's designed to play 3D images specifically may correct these issues, but only time will tell. We're hoping to see more for ourselves at this years CES in Vegas. Do you think this is a smart move on Sony's part?
I still think we're a ways off from seeing 3D implentation be truly innovative and useful in games but I don't mind 3D being an option or an additional feature enhancement in games as long as the prices aren't raised.
unnecessary technology. i really can care less on these gimmicks they keep pulling out of there asses. another way to get suckers..er consumers to waste money.

A lot of people were impressed with the 3D demo that Sony showed earlier this year with games like Motorstorm and Wipeout. I still think we're a ways off from seeing 3D implentation be truly innovative and useful in games but I don't mind 3D being an option or an additional feature enhancement in games as long as the prices aren't raised. I would love to see how the 3D looks in the Avatar game but I sadly don't have the money to get a snazzy 3D TV.
