Even though I’m an American citizen and have lived in Chicago my entire life I’m just fond of European sports more than those that are in America. Yeah I do like basketball a lot and I can enjoy the NFL when it isn’t bogged down in penalties or constant three minute breaks between the action. Overall I’m just more of a soccer fan and I’m also quite fond of rugby, which to me is a criminally underrated.
Rugby isn’t a huge sport at all in North America even though it does have a small presence in the country through indie leagues, college teams and even youth tag rugby, which thankfully instills how awesome the sport is to youngsters. Rugby hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to video games and even the mighty Electronic Arts has been a bit hit and miss with their rugby offerings over the last few years.
The sport of rugby may finally be able to catch a break amongst those in North America with the release impending release of Rugby Challenge. Destined to appear on the PS3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita and PC, Rugby Challenge is basically the Madden equivalent of a rugby video game. The authenticity of Rugby Challenge is definitely without question since the New Zealand based Sidhe (Shatter) is tackling the project. Having a few rugby games under their belts already, Sidhe is taking things to the next level as Rugby Challenge looks amazing.
This new trailer for the game may not show us straight forward gameplay but it does show off some nice tackles as well as showing the depth that rugby offers as a sport. When comparing American football to rugby, it’s hard even for the most ardent NFL fans to appreciate the level of athleticism that rugby requires since there are no helmets or full-on body protection.
I don’t know if Rugby Challenge will be a thoroughly perfect recreation of the wonderful sport that is rugby but the game is looking good and it includes the traditional Haka of the New Zealand All Blacks (my fave team) so that’s good enough for me. I’m still searching to see if Rugby Challenge will be released in North America since I would appreciate the chance to play a good rugby game or at least a rugby game in general. Rugby Challenge is scheduled to be released later this year to coincide with the Rugby World Cup so I’m hoping that the game will see a broad release in both Europe and North America.
