Blizzard dashes hopes of World of Starcraft.

Posted in

A long, long time ago Blizzard dropped an MMO which would eventually go on to reshape and define online gaming for the majority of “mamorpagamers”.  World of Warcraft all these many years later is still pulling in unfathomable sales figures, with an absolutely disgusting install base.

I flirted with the game for a while, getting a few character to about the mid-point in the game. What would inevitably lead me to uninstall the game and cancel my account, was the fact that I really didn’t have much interest in the Fantasy genre. I found myself easily disinterested in magic and swords. Though the game play was so well done that every time I tried to move on to another MMO, I would end up riding out the free trial before reinstalling WoW.

Then the rumours of a Starcraft MMO started swirling. I pledged my allegiance to the idea of the game, before anything else was ever heard about it.  It’s unfortunate that those hopes have been dashed by a recent post on Blizzards official forms, which confirm the fact that the next MMO from Blizzard is going to be a new IP.

People are saying that there is another MMO in the works at Blizzard. Seriously, if there was, they would be advertising it already.

Games take years to develop from concept to release. Diablo III was in the works for years before being announced. StarCraft II was announced two years ago and isn't even in Beta yet.

We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far. We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch. It's an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel. Our track record supports this.

No idea yet what the original IP is going to be. What era, time, or setting it may take. But here’s to hoping it takes place in a more modern, or (dare to dream) futuristic setting so I can have spaceships instead of chickens to ride on.

I would also be interested in a future / space setting. I always thought a World of Starcraft would have been way cooler then Warcraft MMO. So we'll see what this new IP is. It'll be interesting to see Blizzard bring out some new characters / worlds / stories.

If they make is as popular as WOW then all other MMO's will be in trouble. They will almost have a monopoly on that genre.

In a way I'm kind of glad that it will be a new IP. But I still cannot wait to find out what this new IP is lol
