For the past two years LucasArts just hasn’t been the company it once was. One would never make the argument that LucasArts was comparable to a studio like Electronic Arts on a publisher/developer side, but there was loads of talent there that never quite came through, perhaps due to mismanagement. After releasing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed LucasArts fired quite a lot of people, according to some reports half the internal LucasArts dev team got the boot.
Then a few months ago we received further reports that LucasArts was letting more people go in the wake of finishing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II. Well if that wasn’t enough, there are even more layoffs occurring at LucasArts if industry veteran George Broussard is to be believed. According to Broussard, layoffs are occurring at LucasArts as we speak but Broussard didn’t mention any details as to how many people are being affected by the layoffs and what sort of restructuring are happening at the company, if any.
In the past Broussard has been on the money when it comes to tweets of this nature and no one should doubt his info since he’s a trusted industrial veteran. At this point after the constant layoffs, and a rumored restructuring that no longer involves 3rd party developers, LucasArts is a complete shell of its former self. A lot of people had hope in the company with the release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, but even that proved to be disappointing on quite a few levels.
Once more details come to light concerning the situation at LucasArts I’ll be sure to let everyone know what’s going on.
