EA's Skate franchise has finally gone into generic sequel mode

After giving us two excellent games EA’s Skate franchise is showing the first sign that it could be going the way of Activision’s Tony Hawk series of being run into the ground with unnecessary sequels.

When the teaser trailer for Skate 3 was released a few months back many fans of the series were wondering why we were getting a sequel so soon.  Skate 2 had just been released in January and as a whole was a solid game aside from a few small issues.  Even with Skate 3’s new city of Port Carverton and heavy focus on online play the overall reaction was quite lukewarm. And I expect after watching this premier trailer for Skate 3 the reaction will just become downright cold.

The general vibe the new Skate 3 trailer gives off is everything looks extremely bland and the game itself feels pointless. So-so character models, uninspiring locations and cliché skate gang names and logos clearly give off the impression that Skate 3 is simply a cash-in and not the next logical step for the franchise. When the game first came out EA and developer Black Box were pretty adamant that the series wouldn’t churn out yearly sequels Tony Hawk style but it looks like they’ve reneged on that promise.

EA could feel threatened by Activisions new Tony Hawk: Ride game. I work in a shopping centre and there was a display on last weekend allowing the public to sample the new interface, and there was a good turnout.

I tried the board and whilst it's as close to the real thing as those plastic guitars are (i.e. not very) I did enjoy it.
