For the past couple months news on the next Mortal Kombat installment has been extremely cryptic. Outside of a few "solid" updates such as voice actor info, most of the MK9 news has come via MK co-creator Ed Boon. Actually I wouldn't call Boon's updates news since he's just teasing us via Twitter. But Boon has posted a few interesting tidbits and once again the MK co-creator has posted something that will have all the MK die-hards talking.
Yesterday Boon posted the following message on Twitter:
Here are those MK9 beta codes I promised you: TEERH-ONRUS-TNUBT-NO Hope you enjoy the beta! Just kidding...I ain't got shit. ;)
Now aside from Boon's always pleasant playful banter there's actually something worthwhile to decipher. If you flip the letters of the "beta code" the resulting message is "There's No Run Button." This is of course a referance to MK2 which featured no run button, unlike it's successor MK3.
For a great while now there's been a belief that MK9 would be a throwback to the good old days of MK, not only in spirit and presentation but in terms of gameplay as well. While Boon or any of the other MK staff has made any firm comments on a MK reboot similar to Street Fighter IV, it seems to be the likely case.
It won't be long before we find out what MK9 has to offer as the game will debut at E3 in June. But I'll just say that if anyone expected a MK9 in a similar style to Vincent Proce's amazing MK concept art then it's not happening at all for the foreseeable future. But that's a story for another day.
