In my every day and my profession, my conversations always drift to video games. No matter who I speak with they are always quick to jump on their stories. The most common story told by a stranger is the "how I got started gaming" story. I have never really understood why that is the first story told by gamers, maybe it reveals more then we think. The answer to the question could reveal just how long you've been gaming, how much money you had, how hardcore you are or even (if it was brand new at the time you played it) how old you are.
I think for us it was definitely Moraffs revenge and the Treasures of the deep series on our old OLD comp (yes they have always been computers :P ) that acted as our gateway to gaming, but the ones that got us addicted to gaming were most definately the Mario series, than things like DOOM, Starcraft, Metroid, Street Fighter, Super Bomberman, Zelda.... the list goes on...
One of the big reasons that question gets asked though is to set up a base understanding of the other persons gaming background, if you get "Oh I got into Guitar Hero pretty hard and have been "gaming" since." That guys going to be right up there on the gamer douche bag scale :)

lol @ the gamer douche bag scale!! That's so true.
My start was also with the NES since my older sisters introduced me to Super Mario Bros. Apparently, I thought motion control already existed and I was tilting around the controller and what not to move characters.
Same here for me, NES got me started. Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt ftw!
I am the same as everyone here. Is started with the NES and Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. Those games were awesome.
My pops owned an arcade/candy store. Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Pole Position I think (I know I use to play a driving game a lot), A Tarzan type game (name escapes me now) I'm pretty sure a bunch of other games but those are the ones that I remember playing every weekend & after school instead of doing my homework.
I don't think any one particular game got me addicted to gaming. I never went there & played the same game for hours & hours. There were just too many games for that. Maybe Dragon Lair which looked like a freaking cartoon (which it was) Visually, it blew everything else my pops had out the water. I would go watch other kids play instead of playing the other games, that's how good the game looked.
Even at home I went from game to game. We had 3 game systems & so many games. This was before NES. My pops & older brothers were/are gamers too.
LOL @ Shaolin I know what you mean. I used to do that with SMB at the end of the levels jumping on the flag pole
I'm not entirely certain which game was my first. I do know that my grandmother (yes, that's correct--The woman who birthed the woman, who birthed me!) had an NES and Super Mario Bros. 1-3, but it was my uncle who really got me into games. I certainly liked playing them for their own sake, but my uncle definitely played a role as a positive reinforcer in the very beginning. Some of the games he showed me which stick out are Blaster Master, Dragon Power (The very first, original US release of a pre-anime Dragon Ball game), and Wizards & Warriors for the NES. Then, I also played Indiana Jones in Revenge of The Ancients for DOS and watched my mother play Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant. However, I really began to play for myself, alongside my cousin, on the SNES with the Donkey Kong Country series, A Link To The Past, and Super Metroid. Those were the most memorable titles, but one other also sticks out in my mind which I must acknowledge as being immensely fun and stimulating: X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse.

My start was the NES and....*tears* so much gaming nirvana.Mario Bros and Duck Hunt was the beginning.
