A while ago some rumors surfaced that involved Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci starring in the live action Uncharted film. We all know that a film based on the PS3 mega franchise is in the works, but to some folks it was a bit hard to comprehend Mark Wahlberg starring as Nathan Drake. And as much as I loved their performances in Goodfellas and Casino, I would rather not have a Robert de Niro & Joe Pesci reunion in an Uncharted movie. But this is Hollywood we’re talking about here so of course that means the rumored casting will happen, and that’s according to Marky Mark himself.
In an interview with MTV promoting his new film “The Fighter” Mark Wahlberg revealed that he indeed is in talks to star in the Uncharted film. The main reason we’re going to see Mr. Dirk Diggler star in Uncharted is because David O. Russell is helming the flick, who most recently directed Mark Wahlberg in “The Fighter.” You see, it’s always good to have connections in Hollywood since it allows gigs to be obtained easily.
Speaking on the project Wahlberg said
“The idea that he [Director David O. Russell] has is just insane. So hopefully we'll be making that movie this summer.”
So in the Summer of 2012 we can logically see an Uncharted film starring Mark Wahlberg, but here’s the real kicker: De Niro and Pesci may actually be in the movie as well.
Concerning his possible co-stars Wahlberg said
“I'm obviously in whatever David wants to do but the idea of it is so off the charts: De Niro being my father, Pesci being my uncle. It's not going to be the watered-down version, that's for sure.”
Wait what? We’re going to see Papa Drake and Uncle Drake tag along with Nathan in the film? I’m all for expanding the story but this is one of those things where the film needs to tread carefully. Though to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if David O. Russell just does whatever the hell he wanted and the film had zero connection to the core Uncharted mythos and the established characters.
And as much as I like Robert de Niro and Joe Pesci, their potential casting just reeks of stunt casting. It’s like “hey look we have Bobby De Niro and Joe Pesci back and in a movie that just so happens to be for a video game.” Robert de Niro is an awesome actor but if we get the De Niro of “Meet the Fockers” and not the De Niro of “Goodfellas” then boy is this movie going to be a trainwreck.
Also, I like Mark Wahlberg as an actor and a dude, but what is he thinking? You would’ve thought after the mega flop that was Max Payne, he would be wise and not do another video game project. But here we are, close on the verge of a beloved Sony franchise possibly being the next video game to get a piss poor film adaptation.
