Midway's Spy Hunter is making a comeback

Back in the PS2 era Midway revived the classic arcade game Spy Hunter. With spy action goodness and a cool theme, the game was received well and two solid sequels were released.  Of course due to the success of the game a movie was planned and Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) was attached to star and get behind the wheel of the Interceptor. But after the film attempts crashed and burn Midway released Spy Hunter 3, a terrible game combining 3rd person action with driving elements which starred Dwayne Johnson.

Now after being stagnant for four years, the Spy Hunter franchise is making a return thanks to Warner Brothers. The studio, which owns Midway, plans to take the antics of Spy Hunter to the big screen in a film adaptation. Spy Hunter’s latest film attempt is being produced by Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) with writer Chad St. John aboard to script the film.  The plot of the film will reportedly follow a spy hunter whose task is to hunt down rogue spies. I hope the majority of the spy hunting takes place in vehicles tricked out with machine guns and oil slicks.

We all know that film adaptations of video games are usually despicable, but I have some hope for Spy Hunter. At this point the franchise would be starting anew and as long as the Interceptor is in the game I think we could be in for a decent action movie. That is unless one of the Twilight dudes is in the cast. And who knows, maybe we’ll see some synergy between the branches of Warner Brothers and a new Spy Hunter game will be released prior to the film.

I hope a new game is released. I had the first ever spy hunter and that was incredible. Never even knew a second and third were released so it could be cool. I remember just managing the first 8 or so levels and not getting any further. But the multiplayer levels were interesting. You know what, might go get my ps2 out and play it :)
