Right now we’re in a dry spell of sorts when it comes to overly exciting news. There have definitely been a few interesting tidbits that have been dropped and some nice announcements, but leading up to the mega event that is E3 things are always slow since various companies are busy planning their reveals and choosing what games will be present at the show. So far we haven’t heard anything too substantial concerning E3 besides the confirmation of the new Hitman game making an appearance and some hogwash concerning Sony’s plans for the event. Nintendo has always typically kept their reveals rather tight lipped, but now word has started to spread that Nintendo will be unveiling something big at E3 this year: their successor to the Nintendo Wii.
For years we’ve heard rumors and jokes that at some point Nintendo would literally do a second iteration of the Wii capable of HD graphics. Such a thing wasn’t really absurd to think but given Nintendo’s stance in the past to not be focused on bleeding edge hardware it seemed unlikely that Nintendo would release their next console before Sony and Microsoft release their respective new consoles. But according to the sources of Game Informer, Nintendo is set to unveil their latest console later this month with a follow-up planned for E3. But do you want to know what the real kicker is? The device is reportedly being pegged for a 2012 release.
So far the various sources that have decided to open their yaps concerning Nintendo’s new console have said that it’ll be a HD device and that it would possibly surpass the current graphical capabilities of the PS3 and Xbox 360. It wouldn’t be that unreasonable to think that Nintendo’s new console would be able to match or slightly exceed the power of the PS3/360 but it’ll be interesting to see just how much more powerful the console is. Is Nintendo going to push things as far as possible in order to keep up with the eventual release of the next PlayStation and Xbox? While Sony and Microsoft have remained silent on when we can expect their new consoles it wouldn’t be too shocking if we have either a new PlayStation or Xbox by at least 2014. So will Nintendo find themselves once again being the weakest console from a graphics standpoint after having the lead for only two or three years max?
Nintendo is reportedly showing their new device to video game publishers in the hopes of getting people on board and knowing Nintendo’s power and might I’m sure a few key publishers will be keen to hop on board. It may be a bit too early to predict what games will be available for Nintendo’s new platform, but it would be a bit ironic and surely tear inducing if Nintendo delays Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword to have it be a launch title for their new console.
Seeing Nintendo be so eager to come out the gate first is rather interesting considering their current dominance in the market. But I guess the recent slow sales of the Wii have made Nintendo advance their plans faster than expected so as to not lose too much momentum.
If this rumor pans out, which seems to be the case right now, then E3 is going to be absolutely insane this year. With the NGP, Nintendo’s new console and core franchise games from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo I think it may be hard trying to keep up with the craziness that is E3 this year.
