A Release Window Is Finally Given For Journey (Prepare For Slight Disappointment)

I have some sad news for gamers who love unique experiences on the PlayStation:  the PSN bound game Journey won’t be coming out until Spring 2012.  The next game from acclaimed developer thatgamecompany, Journey has received a lot of attention as of late thanks to the simply gorgeous videos and screens that have been released.  Sony and thatgamecompany never gave a firm release date for Journey, but when the game received a closed beta in July many assumed the game would be a lock for a late 2011 release, but alas we’ll have to wait until 2012.

There isn’t an exact reason as to why Journey isn’t coming out soon but thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen had this to say, “Fortunately, the online beta went very well, and our continued playtests have given us great feedback on the work we have left to complete. While there is still a ton of care and polish needed, we can’t wait to finally deliver Journey, TGC’s take on an online adventure game.”

Whereas many games face delays or revised release dates because they have issues, it seems like Sony and thatgamecompany simply want to take their time with Journey instead of rushing it out the door.  It would be nice to take a journey filled with adventure, mystery and a bit of self-reflection this Winter, but I’m perfectly fine with waiting until next year – pending of course it doesn’t launch in March when I’m in full-on Max Payne 3 “I’m a bald killer” mode.

I haven’t managed to play Journey yet, I’m trying to go in media blackout mode, but I think I can wait a few more months to finally get my hands on the title.  So far thatgamecompany haven’t disappointed us in what they offer and personally I feel as if they’re one of the last bastions for pure creativity in the video game business since flow and Flower presented two experiences that were unlike anything we’ve seen before in every major category.
