Rockstar Games Goes The Epic Specialty SKU Route With The Max Payne 3 Special Edition

Rockstar Games is doing something a little out of character as they’ve announced the Max Payne 3 Special Edition. Set to coincide with the release of Max Payne 3 in early March, the Special Edition SKU will have some familiar elements that most Special Edition items tend to have in addition to some high profile content that may please hardcore Max Payne fans.

For the low price of $100 gamers can enjoy all the items the Max Payne 3 Special Edition has to offer, the biggest of which is the 10” tall Max Payne statue that’s included in the package.  A joint venture between Rockstar and collectible manufacturer TriForce (the firm doing the recent Gears of War products), the Max Payne statue looks like it ought to be a nice collector’s item. Depicting Max in his better but still not so great days, the statue features Max in his “classic” look with hair and a slick suit, which sadly isn’t black but it’s still better than a hobo wife beater shirt.

Other items included in the Max Payne 3 Special Edition include a bullet keychain, a series of art prints, and the original soundtrack for the game.  Rockstar will be following the trend of including bonus weapons as part of pre-order packages as gamers can also get ahold of the Disorderly Conduct multiplayer weapons pack which includes nifty things like a grenade launcher, an automatic shotgun, and the classic Molotov cocktail.

So far the content in the Max Payne 3 Special Edition may sound good and all but this is where things get interesting.  Those who have heavy wallets and opt to purchase the Special Edition will get early access to the Classic Multiplayer Character pack which will include eight different characters.  Included in the pack will be Max’s old look from Max Payne 2 along with more notable characters like Mona Sax and Vladimir Lem.  It’s cool to see Rockstar Games acknowledge the past of Max Payne and give fans of the series something to try out once they hop into the multiplayer action, which as of now has still hasn’t been revealed by Rockstar.

It’s somewhat surprising to see Rockstar release a Special Edition for Max Payne 3 since it’s not exactly on the same caliber as Grand Theft Auto.  Rockstar isn’t a complete stranger to the realm of specialty SKUs as one was released for GTAIV, but we didn’t see anything for Red Dead Redemption or L.A. Noire outside of some cool tie-in products.  Perhaps Rockstar will be going the epic route with their releases in the future since it’s an easy way to make some cash and I think this all but guarantees we’ll see a Special Edition for GTAV once it comes out, which I hope will come with something other than a duffle bag and a lock box.

After seeing the last video for Max Payne 3 that cemented the game as one of my must-play games of 2012 but I don’t know if I’ll get the Special Edition.  The content included in it is cool but the price is rather steep and I may just be better off waiting for the eventual $20-$40 price drop.

The Max Payne 3 Special Edition is available to pre-order now until January 15, 2012.
