Sony establishes Classics HD brand

PS3 gamers have been crying out for more HD versions of classic PS2 games and Sony seems intent on giving us that. Last year the God of War Collection proved to be a success and now Sony is releasing the Sly Collection later this year.  Now it seems like Sony is going all out with the HD updates as Sony is creating an entirely new brand for them.

While it’s always a bit presumptuous to rely on early box art, this Euro box art for the Sly Collection gives us a hint at Sony’s upcoming plans. Aside from all the usual PEGI rating and Sony branding a new Classics HD label is also present on the Sly box art.  So while we haven’t gotten an official press release detailing future releases, it should be safe to say that Sony plans to expand the current offerings of PS2 HD upgrades available on the PS3 with this new brand.

Now the only question is what game will follow the Sly Collection? The most likely candidate seems to be a HD version of Ico & Shadow of the Colossus as that was rumored a few weeks ago. After all it would be fitting given the release of Team Ico’s The Last Guardian. But with the release of The Last Guardian still being a ways off maybe we’ll see another classic PS2 franchise pop up instead.  With Sony resurrecting Sly could we see Jak & Daxter follow suit? Or maybe we’ll get a huge surprise and a 3rd party company like Konami may jump aboard the bandwagon with a HD version of Metal Gear Solid. 

Whatever happens after the Sly Collection I’m sure it’ll be awesome and gamers will love it. And this is going to make me sound like an even bigger Sony fanboy but we need to give huge props to Sony for going forward with the Classics HD label.
