THQ developer Volition looks to be going in a different route with their next game. I’m of course not referring to either Red Faction: Armageddon or Saints Row 3. Instead it looks like the studio will be creating a RPG. Yup, the studio known for giving us Mars based action and brutal gang battles in the city of Stilwater could be giving us their first attempt at an RPG game since the PS2 title Summoner 2.
But Volition working on a RPG isn’t the only interesting thing to come to light. The news, which comes from Volition’s job page, says the following:
Volition is searching for a Design Director for a new action role-playing game. We are collaborating with a high-powered creative talent in the entertainment industry to develop this original, unannounced franchise. The successful candidate will have a proven track record leading design teams and creating AAA-quality player experiences.
The whole “high-powered creative talent” part of the job description definitely has my interest piqued. With the news that director Guillermo del Toro is teaming up with THQ to produce new IPs, it’s very likely that Volition has been tasked with creating the first game for the acclaimed director. While the deal between del Toro and THQ hasn’t officially been announced, it wouldn’t be odd for Volition to start prepping for the project by getting more staff members.
So has Volition been chosen to bring Guillermo del Toro’s video game vision to life? Or is the studio working on another high-end project with a famous creative talent? With the roll THQ has been on lately maybe del Toro isn’t the only film director the company has acquired. Personally I’m hoping Volition is doing del Toro’s game since Volition+Guillermo del Toro+RPG has all the makings of an epic game.
Indeed James, with Volition's talent and potentially Guillermo behind the story it should be awesome. I just think it may awhile before we hear anything since Volition still has to unveil Saints Row 3 (going to happen in December at the Spike VGA) so I guess that leaves a potential E3 2011 tease.

Volition is a good developer. so that game mechanics should be good. The thing I would worry about is the story but since it has a good person to worry about that, then they should be fine. I wanmt to hear more about this game in the near future.
