We’re a few hours away learning some new details on the PlayStation motion controller and thanks to some inquisitive eyes we perhaps have the final name and logo for the device. So the first rumored named for the PS motion controller was Gem, a name which in all honestly would’ve made me be in face palm position for years if that had been the final name. Then Arc arose as yet another name or at least codename that the device was under and as a whole was a name that everyone liked since it formed the acronym Alternate Reality Controller, which seemed like a perfect name from a marketing standpoint.
Now a new name has been uncovered thanks to NeoGAF user gofreak who this morning found a trademark filed by SCEI. Yesterday SCEI trademarked PlayStation Move and its description is rather telling:
So either this is for the PlayStation motion controller, an unknown product or maybe Sony is just teasing us and this is a red herring. In the past Sony hasn’t been too devious with its trademarks as most of them have panned out, though sometimes not in the ways we had hoped for.
Additionally also uncovered by the knowledgeable gofreak was a non-word marking filed under the same trademark. I won’t bother attempting to describe the mark as you can see it for yourself below. As you the mark somewhat looks like the letter A, so is the device going to be called Arc or PlayStation Move?
Though it is possible that the mark could merely be a logo for the device or perhaps a representation on the back of game cases to show that motion control is supported. At this point I just hope Sony at least slightly acknowledges the actual name of the motion device today at GDC as it would be nice for everyone to know what to call the damn thing.
